The debut album by Bolt Thrower might not be a particularly special or groundbreaking death metal document - it came out a little too late to be regarded as a pioneering early example of the genre, unlike the early albums by Possessed or Death, and it didn't quite make enough of a mark to divert attention from Florida, where acts like Morbid Angel or Deicide were preparing debuts which would make the state the capital of death metal for a brief period. At the same time, it's a competently performed and enjoyable example of the basic death metal style, with just enough influence from grindcore and crust punk to escalate things to a fever pitch. Though subsequent Bolt Thrower albums would enjoy a greater level of attainment, you can see the seeds of a great band in here, and even this early in their career they could stand up to any of their contemporaries in terms of sheer brutality.
