Formed in Disgust (2016) is the second full-length album by US death metal act Atrocious Abnormality. It's coming up to a whopping nine years since the band's first album Echoes of the Rotting (2007) so this is very much a comeback release for the group. This album seems to have been planned for quite a while given that the group's Facebook biography says it was set to be recorded in winter 2011/2012.

The music on Formed in Disgust is technical brutal death metal. Extremely well played stuff with some prominent bass being a defining feature. The vocals are mostly the deep and indiscernible type common to this style of death metal. I doubt this is anything you haven't heard before if you know the style, but I do think that Formed in Disgust is more well done than most, thanks in no small part to the level of technical playing that Atrocious Abnormality display. The short running time (a little shy of a full half hour) ensures that the album doesn't outstay it's welcome, which is no doubt a good thing as there isn't much by way of surprise on the album, but I guess that's to be expected with this kind of release. The final song, Incestry, throws a brief curve ball by including a country sounding bit before quickly descending back into their usual business (but round off with a quick final lick in that style).

There seems to be some sort of interesting concept going on as evidenced by the narration used on the album, notably in the opening Failed Apocalypse, which seems to revolve around an alien race recycling the Earth. Whether there is any actual plot to follow on the album or not is made impossible to tell though because of the vocal style.

I wouldn't call it groundbreaking by any means, but I think you could do far worse than Atrocious Abnormality's Formed in Disgust if looking for something new to satisfy a hunger for brutal death metal.
