Down on the Upside is the 5th full-length studio album by American hard rock/ metal act Soundgarden. It was the last album release before the band split-up. The album was released in May 1996 through A&M Records.

After the huge commercial and artistic success of Superunknown (1994), Soundgarden could only disappoint and sadly they did. Down on the Upside is quite the letdown to be honest and while it´s certainly a professional and well produced album, the songs generally lack memorable melody lines and hooks to capture my attention. The best songs on Down on the Upside probably wouldn´t even have made the cut for Superunknown and that says a lot IMO. 3 stars for a pretty mediocre and way too long album. With material this anonymous, Soundgarden should have cut about 25 minutes of the 65 minute playing time to make this album just a moderately better release.
