"Depths" is the 4th full-length studio album by Australian black metal act Pestilential Shadows. The album was released in February 2011 by Seance Records.

The music on the album is atmospheric black metal. Tremolo picking, raspy vocals and blasting drums but always with an atmospheric edge. The tracks can at times seem a bit repetitive but they seldom become boring as a consequence of that. It´s just part of building a melancholic and epic atmosphere.

The musicianship on the album is strong. The vocals are nothing out of the ordinary but the playing is tight and because of the professional yet not too clean production you´re fully able to hear what´s going on. Personally I could have wished for a more organic drum production instead of a clearly triggered ditto, but that might be an aquired taste. I simply feel a more organic sound would have suited the atmospheric music better.

"Depths" is quite the enjoyable atmospheric black metal album and while it´s not the most distinct sounding or original release out there I´d still say a 3.5 star rating is warranted.
