"Demo #1" is the first demo recording by Finnish thrash metal act Sceptical Schizo. The demo was independently released in 1989. Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra. They didn´t manage to release a full-length studio album during the 1988-1993 period, but they were still relatively active releasing no less than four demos and two EPs.

Stylistically the material on this first demo recording is a brutal, aggressive, and relatively primitive type of thrash metal. To my ears they sound a little like a less sophisticated contemporary Sepultura (Possessed is another valid reference). The sound production is murky, lo-fi, and really doesn´t do much good for the material. The grunted vocals completely steal the show whenever they appear as they are placed way too high in the mix. The bass is also pretty high, while the guitars are buried in the mix.

The musicianship is not on a particularly high level. The drumming is almost painfully simple and lacks the necessary energy and creativity to drive the music forward and upon conclusion this first demo from Sceptical Schizo is an amaturish affair. I´m not sure I hear much promise here and I´d much rather listen to early demo releases from other contemporary Finnish thrash metal acts like Mengele, Protected Illusion, The Hirvi, or Phlegethon. Compared to those artists this demo is best forgotten. A 1 star (20%) rating is warranted.
