"Demo 1" is the first demo recording by US death/black metal act Order From Chaos. The demo was independently released in January 1988. It was recorded on a four-track tape recorder in guitarists Chuck Keller´s garage. Order From Chaos formed in 1987 in Kansas City, Missouri and initially existed until 1995.

On this demo Order From Chaos play a simple, blackened speed/thrash metal style which is greatly influenced by artists like Venom, Bathory, and Hellhammer. I´m also often reminded of Immortal minus the epic elements of their music. This is raw, gritty, and features a lo-fi recording quality which provides the demo with an authenticity and charm that only releases from that time possess.

It´s not exactly a masterpiece, but I can see why Order From Chaos are often mentioned as a seminal US black metal act (although they were never 100% a black metal act). They have the attitude, the blackened sound and image, and the right set of skills to pull it of. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.
