Satyricon's sound as of Dark Medieval Times isn't that far off most other black metal acts of the same era when it comes to the basics, but little embellishments - an acoustic guitar passage here, some very subtle synthesisers to add a sniff of texture there - help lend the album its own particular atmosphere. It took a while for this one to grow on me, particularly considering the rather generic lyrics and lead guitar, but it's a whole which ends up amounting to a bit more than the sum of its parts. Fans of second-wave black metal will doubtless want to give it a listen, but if you aren't familiar with the subgenre this probably isn't the best starting point.
