It was always the combination of Meat Loaf with Jim Steinman which really made this whole crazy Wagnerian rock deal they had going on work, as witnessed by Bat Out of Hell II being Meat's best album since the debut. As steeped in early 1990s pop-rock cheesiness as the first one was in the excesses of its time period, Bat Out of Hell II also includes the occasional moment where you realise that Jim's lyrics aren't necessarily all that stupid, and Meat's delivery isn't as bone-headed as you always wrote it off as being. Objects In the Rear View Mirror, for instance, is a really neatly constructed allegory which makes its central point remarkably well. The last two songs are a disaster (particularly the pointless Back Into Hell instrumental) but for the most part this is another great success.
