"Aggressions" is an EP release by Finnish thrash metal act Sceptical Schizo. The EP was independently released in May 2019. It´s the successor to "The Plight" EP from January 1993, so there´s obviously been a long break in activity since the release of "The Plight". Sceptical Schizo formed in 1988 under the Epidemic monicker but changed their name to Sceptical Schizo later the same year. They operated under the Sceptical Schizo band name until 1993 when they changed their name to Lavra. They didn´t manage to release a full-length studio album during the 1988-1993 period, but they were still relatively active releasing no less than four demos and two EPs during their original run.

Stylistically the first four demo releases were in a brutal thrash metal style although the band began to experiment with their sound on the last two demos. Sepultura and Possessed were the most valid references when listening to the demo material from Sceptical Schizo. When they released the June 1992 "Into the Suction of Blue / Withdrawn" EP things had however changed drastically, as Sceptical Schizo now played an experimental/avant-garde death-doom metal style and that tendencey continued on "The Plight" EP. On "Aggressions", Sceptical Schizo have opted to return to the raw thrash metal style of their demos, but they don´t really hit the mark.

The murky darkness and aggression of the early demo recordings aren´t really present on this dry and digital recorded EP and lead vocalist/guitarist Joonas Sukanen now has a shouting and rather powerless delivery. The distorted and brutal death/thrash metal vocals of the early releases are gone, and as the music is also pretty standard fare thrash metal (Slayer is an obvious influence but Sceptical Schizo aren´t nearly as intense or effective in their delivery), there´s just little here to make "Aggressions" stand out among the vast number of thrash metal releases coming out every year. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.
