Tink, tink, tink, tink, tink!
That's the cymbal sound you'll hear a lot of over the 30 minute album that is Baldurs Traum. I don't mind a bit of the old cymbal clashing, but when it's as monotonous and non-divergent as it is on this album, it's kind of a drag. As well as that, it's probably way too high in the mix of things, and really communicates a super-low fi vibe to the music.
Low fi isn't bad. But it can come off as amateurish, as it does here. The segments of the album length song tend to just dirge along without any real standout moments except when it breaks in ambient/melodic interludes...which is good, until...tink, tink, tink, tink, tink comes back in again. Ragnar, the sole member of Ulsdalir at this time does show a lot of talent in his performance, but the problem is the black metal isn't his strong point on this album just yet. I preferred the ambiance thrown in.
It's not truly awful, just feels really underproduced and it's not my cup of tea. For me, it's only two stars.
