Genre: thrash metal

Those who know me know that I like thrash metal quite a lot. This obscure demo by crossover thrashers D.N.A. (short for 'Death by Nuclear Annihilation') is apparently here to remind me that not all thrash metal is good. In fact, this demo is pretty lousy - even by demo standards.

The performance is incredibly sloppy, with the drums all over the place and the bass hitting the wrong notes, while the guitars are out of tune. The vocalist, a dude called Spaz, prefers yelling over singing and seems to be rhythmically challenged.

Musically, there is not much to brag about either. The four songs on the demo are pretty boring, lacking guitar solos and consist mostly of uninspired riffs. There are some good ideas though such as the clean-guitared introductions to 'Sweet Like A Rose' and 'Nigt of the Creeps' (the structur eof the latter track, however, is pretty silly though), and the main riffs of both 'Victim in Damnation' and 'Time Will Come' are pretty crushing (the latter song actually has a lot of potential though).

And still I enjoy listening to this demo. Why? Probably because it represents a lost era in underground music - namely, the era of demo tapes. It fills me with nostalgia when I listen to it because I belong to that generation of metal dudes who would make lousy demos, spending a weekend trying to cram a five-piece band down to four tracks using a borrowed 4-track recorder. The sound is of course raw and lo-fi, but that's the authentic demo tape sound.

So, if you are from my generation, or older, or if you are nuts about obscurities from the past, then you might enjoy this release for what it is. As a work of music, "Victim in Damnation" belongs to the low quality end of the scale.
