Blowing in on a violent wind that will change the metal scene everywhere and forever are the new masters of old school thrash "Condition Critical". Established in late 2010, and after a few adjustments in their lineup, the four piece thrash band "Condition Critical" was brought to life. "Condition Critical" broke through front lines of the metal scene in northern and southern New Jersey in early 2011 and has never looked back. The band, a four piece fronted by vocalist and guitarist Alonso Maguino with members Ryan Donato on drums, bassist Mike Dreher, and guitarist Tony Barhoum, create a whirlwind of chaos and flowing brutality that can be found nowhere else on earth. With influences like "Slayer", "Demolition Hammer", "Overkill", "Vio-lence", "Testament", "Exodus" and "Kreator". Condition Critical brings all this and more to the table. "A literal war of sound that attacks you with deadly perfection", says New Wave

CONDITION CRITICAL Extermination Plan

"Extermination Plan" is the 2nd full-length studio album by US, New Jersey based thrash metal act Condition Critical. The album was independently released in March 2016. It´s the successor to "Operational Hazard" from 2013 and features two lineup changes since the debut album as guitarists/vocalists Alonso Maguiño and Sam Agnew have left and have been replaced by guitarist Tony Barhoum and lead vocalist/guitarist Ryan Taylor. So it´s only the rhythm section from "Operational Hazard (2013)" (drummer Ryan Donato and bassist Mike Dreher), who are still on board.

Stylistically however the material on "Extermination Plan" is a continuation of the raw and brutal thrash metal style of "Operational Hazard (2013)". Demolition Hammmer is still the first act I think about when listening to "Extermination Plan", which was also the case on the debut album, but the influence is just slightly less obvious here. Condition Critical are not the most original sounding act though, and it´s a bit of a shame that the band haven´t worked on creating a more unique sound in the years since the debut. The material is brutal and raw thrash metal with a snarling vocalist in front. Sharp thrash metal riffs and rhythms, screaming guitar solos, and a loud bass.

The latter is to my ears actually a bit of a sound production issue, as it´s placed so high in the mix, that it often overshadows the guitars, and I can´t help focus on the loud bass, when I should primarity focus on the overall soundscape. A loud and dominant bass is not always an issue, which artists like Sadus, Atheist and Defiled are for example exponents of, but here it sounds more like a production issue than a conscious choice, and it doesn´t take more than a few minutes before it becomes a little annoying.

So "Extermination Plan" is a bit up and down in quality. It´s overall a solid thrash metal release in the more raw and brutal end of the scale with some relatively skilled musicians playing/singing, but the songwriting is pretty standard for the genre with few tracks standing out, and as mentioned the sound production is not without issues. There´s also the minor issue that Condition Critical don´t seem to have developed their sound one bit since the debut album, and therefore a 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

CONDITION CRITICAL Operational Hazard

"Operational Hazard" is the debut full-length studio album by US, New Jersey based thrash metal act Condition Critical. The album was released through Burned by God Records in July 2013. Condition Critical formed in 2010 and released the "Bred to Kill" demo in 2011.

Stylistically the material on "Operational Hazard" is a brutal and aggressive type of thrash metal, and it doesn´t take more than a few minutes of playing time listening to the opening track "Random Acts of Killing" to hear that Condition Critical are greatly influenced by their countrymen in Demolition Hammer and on this release, particularly by the debut album by said artist "Tortured Existence (1990)". Sharp and brutal thrash metal riffs, blistering screaming solos, a powerful and energetic rhythm section, and some rabid dog snarling vocals in front (and the occasional use of riot gang choirs). There are even some lyrical themes which are quite similar to those of Demolition Hammer, and tracks like "Parasitic Torment", "Surgical Malpractice", and "Morning Sickness" are close to being clone material.

So it´s safe to say you won´t be treated to anything unique or original sounding on "Operational Hazard", but fortunately Condition Critical are a well playing act and they know how to write an effectful thrash metal tune. They don´t quite reach the quality level of their heroes. To reach those heights Condition Critical need to write tracks which are easier to tell apart and which feature more catchy moments. As "Operational Hazard" is now, it´s still a good quality brutal thrash metal release and it´s highly entertaining while it plays, but for all it´s intensity and furious aggression, a few more hooks would have meant a lot for the final product. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is still well deserved though and fans of Demolition Hammer and brutal thrash in general, should of course give this one a listen.
