Church Of Misery is a japanese stoner doom metal band with a specific extra-groovy sound that is often described as "stoner doom" but the band tends to snub this term saying "We hate trend. We hate corporate attitude. We hate the word 'stoner'. Death to false stoners!! Let there be DOOM!!" (citation from the Master of Brutality album cover artwork notes). Band was formed in 1996 in Tokyo by bassist Tatsu Mikami (ex-Salem) and guitarist Tomohiro Nishimura, line-up was completed with singer Nobukazu Chow and drummer Hideki Shimizu. Band's raw and groovy style of doom metal rooted in 70s heavy rock with psychedelic feel and their notable lyrics mostly based on the famous serial killers' characters soon founded out the way into the hearts of the underground metal fans all over the world even though the band didn't played anywhere outside Japan until 2005. Church of Misery play an ugly, sludgey, fuzzed-out style of doom metal with lyrics that are absolutely obsessed with serial killers - aside from the great Blue Oyster Cult cover on this album, that is. With regular snippets of news reports about the killers they sing about and, at one point, the words of the infamous Ed Kemper himself, it's certainly a uniquely disturbing listen, and whilst I think I'd find their schtick wearing for album after album for this short and sweet release it's a lot of fun. Some listeners may find the subject matter off-putting but if you're cool with it and you like Sabbath-inspired doom metal it's a good pick.

This compilation of early EP tracks and other material pre-dating Church of Misery's debut album (Master of Brutality) isn't quite as encyclopedic as some fans would like - they would have to wait a bit longer to get an official release of Vol 1, which the group had intended as their debut album but ultimately shelved for almost a decade - but it's a reasonable enough overview of the development of the band's style. It's crunchy, Sabbath-inspired purist doom metal about real-life serial killers, and if that sounds like the sort of thing you'd like, then you might find this a good value release.
