Founded in 2001, the sextet play timeless, downbeat music that is rich in nuances, draws from numerous sources and doesn't really have any obvious fellow creatures or point of comparisons.

Callisto's debut "True Nature Unfolds" (2004) received an enthusiastic response and earned the band a worldwide license deal with the British Earache Records.

The band's sophomore album "Noir" was released in 2006 exceeding all the high expectations set by the debut. Still drawing from modern sludge, "Noir" also introduced subtle jazz leanings, heavy use of mellotron and experimentation with unconventional rock instruments such as the saxophone and the flute.

Never interested in repeating themselves, in 2009 Callisto took a bold step further from their earlier, more instrumental material and composed a vocal record presenting a new member Jani Ala-Hukkala taking on vocal duties. The songs on ”Providence” are

Upon first listen, this album may sound like a fairly unspectacular post-metal album.

While Callisto may not add much to the formula with their debut album, there are some subtle touches on this album which separate it from the crowd, such as use of female vocals and some interesting instrumentation.

However, musically this a pretty run of the mill post metal album. An electro-ambient into leads into a song with twin guitar chord attacks, (one taking low register the other taking high) and plaid at a somewhat chuggy pace. Subtle changes, varied sections, harsh vocals (sometimes layered), off kilter drumming and melodicism are on display here. There also some ambient outro's and continuous song transitions.

This can be said for much of the album. This album makes slightly less pronounced use of heavy/light dynamics per song, instead mixing up for every song. This makes each song a bit more uniform and gives the album a balanced feel overall. Far less up and down than many post metal albums. Nice touch.

Throw in some female vocals, some different instruments, (I do mean some) a decent bit of variation and some nice songwriting and you have yourself one fine album. A bit mundane in its overall construction some songs are a bit weak (Limb: Diasporas, Like Abel's Blood Cried for Revenge) and overall it's not too atypical for the genre. Blackhole and Cold Stare are 2 tracks that standout in particular.

Overall, this album is not a very radical departure from the post metal norm. It really doesn't stray from it at all, but there are some small touches added and hey, they do it fine. Very good album.

The record fades in with a surrealistic introduction that sets the stage for some dismal vibes from Callisto that straddle the lines between doom metal and Tool style, dark musical vibes.

The tracks are quite long, giving the band an opportunity to experiment with a lot of dynamic interplay ranging from open sounding breaks that are vast in the breadth of their sonic scope, to slamming dirges that impact the listener with a weighty presence. The impression of “Limb Diasporas” is solemn and grandiose.

The music imparts a melodious tone, even when it launches into a heavy lurch, as the group creates textures of light and shade that make for an emotionally moving listen overall. “Cold Stare” is perhaps the most well rounded tune you’ll discover here, as the band reaches out into a sea of musical depression, resulting in a haunting, epic song that is both intense and harmonious. Rarely do Callisto go for a full on assault, instead, opting to cause aural damage with the arrangements of the material.

“Caverns Of Khafka” lurches into an enormous web of emotions that take the listener up and down a path of huge melodies and thunderous accents designed for a maximum degree of artistic feeling. This release is for those who crave atmosphere overall as Callisto provide plenty of it, and then some. It’s a record that requires the listener to remain focused on the music, as there aren’t really any hooks or simplistic formulations here.

That said, “True Nature Unfolds” is an engaging album which is brimming with forceful, dark harmonies that will certainly be of interest to adventurous listeners who crave music with a large amount of emotional substance and creative, thoughtful song crafting.
