Genre: thrash/metalcore

New Discolour explore the transition area between thrash metal (more specifically modern thrash metal or post-thrash if you wish) and metalcore and add a progressive twist to their music without ever being overly technical.

And it works quite well.

There is a lot going on in every tune, and the listener is treated to uptempo thrashy parts, midtempo groovy parts, and heavy breakdowns, and then wee funny progressive guitar-things pop up every now and then. While not melocore or melodeath or melowhatever, here is a certain sense of melody to this release in the form of guitar leads which are either sort of incorporated into the riffage or has the shape of guitar leads "proper".

New Discolour bolster their riffs with non-standard chords and odd harmonies (which seems to be tendency among newer metalcore acts), and thus there is more than just power chords to their music. While I appreciate this, I must admit that miss guitar solos, because it would have been interesting with guitar solos within the framework provided by the post-thrash/metalcore nature of New Discolour's music.

This is a quite strong debut album, which New Discolour can be very satisfied with. If you can't decide whether you prefer thrash metal or metalcore, then maybe you will love New Discolour.
