Shihad are a four-piece rock band from Wellington, New Zealand.
Shihad formed in 1988 when Jon Toogood and Tom Larkin were still in high school. Guitarist Phil Knight also joined in 1988 and the band initially played thrash metal. Bass player Karl Kippenberger joined in 1991, and the band line-up has been stable ever since. Around the time Kippenberger joined the band, their music style shifted, first incorporating industrial elements, and then moving more to the alternative rock sphere, away from metal.
The band's first album "Churn" was released in 1993, with legendary Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman producing.
The band became New Zealand rock royalty, releasing a string of commercially and critically acclaimed albums and singles. In the course of their career, Shihad have toured with and supported rock acts such as Faith No More, Filter, Motorhead, Metallica, AC/DC, Ash, Silverchair and Fu Manchu.
