Relayer is probably YES at the top of their game. Tales From Topographic Oceans is one of my faves as well although it's a divisive album for many.

I never understood the antipathy towards TFTTO. It’s a really strong release as far as I’m concerned.

Yes I'm certainly intrigued by that one. It will have to be a Spotify listen though as my Dad's only got it on vinyl and the record player packed up years ago.

I don't think you can go wrong with most of their 70's work.

I'm a rare breed for YES lovers. I love their first two albums, Tales of Topographic, Tormato, Drama, 90125 and all the classics. Now from Big Generator on things were hit and miss with a few hits like Magnification and Keys To Ascension but even the lesser albums have a few killa tracks. Def one of my fave bands of all time.

Decided to give this famous album another try after many years. Two tracks in and it isn't going well. Going to say it: the first track is a load of shit.

I recently went through the Pain of Salvation albums. I actually love them. They are so creative and unique. It's an acquired taste for sure. I like weird so they surely won't appeal to everyone. They are kind of a Mr Bungle light in many ways. Genre skipping and extensive proggy hairpin turns. My kinda sheeeet :)

Before:
One of the most metal album covers ever made, and 70's metal doesn't get much better than Cygnus X-1. Now: Another one of the most metal album covers ever made. Every time I see the cunts on RYM bash Pantera I crave this album.

I remember when I bought this the girl in the record store was amazed that I'd heard of them, because the album was brand new. I already Cowboys From Hell. And I'm over my anti-Anselmo kick of a year or so back. The guy's a fucking idiot at times, but he's produced some incredible music.

^Did she not know about Cowboys From Hell? I think all musicians act like idiots sometimes just like everyone else, especially if they have drug/alcohol issues which Phil at least had (don't know if he's since gone to rehab or anything). From what I've seen of interviews and such Phil seems like a pretty honest and down to earth dude at heart. The thing that annoys me is Power Metal still not being reissued, but I'm guessing maybe the Abbot family owns the rights to it rather than Phil or Rex. The RYM hive mind loves to shit on bands and musicians without giving any actual opinion on the music (or really stupid ones like not liking Anthrax because melody and all thrash should sound like Slayer or Kreator I guess? Still really don't know what the reasons are). Now: I don't think I've listened to ANY of this album since 2014, let's see if I like it any better now, I'm a much more open listener than I was back then. Force Ten still kicks ass just as it always has at least.

Not bad. Definitely still think it's one of their weaker albums, but there's some great songwriting on here. The first three and Turn the Page are great, and I don't think there's really any bad songs, just forgettable. Good thing they went back to hard rock sound on the next album though, as the lack of guitars on this album definitely takes the trio out of "Power Trio"

This and Hemispheres are my next stops for going through Rush. I've only heard 2112 and Moving Pictures so far. Picked up the former on CD and I love it.
They do this with Myrkur a lot, but I guess that's hardly unique to RYM. A while back I called one user out for insinuating that the cover art for the new folk album was a rip off of the style of Theodor Kittelsen (when the artwork is a Theodor Kittelsen). Just seemed a really clutching at straws and un-researched jibe made for the sake of having something derogatory to say without hearing the release. They wouldn't have said it about fucking Burzum.

Caress of Steel and Permanent Waves would also be good albums to listen to next, a couple of my favorites. Yeah, it's bizarre who they choose and don't choose to pick on sometimes. They're pretty silent about all the awful stuff that some of those second-wave black metal musicians did (especially the Mayhem gang) but have a field day with some innocuous musician just for previously being a model and former indie pop artist.

With Myrkur and others it's pure misogyny. There are still some toxic metal fans who don't want any women in the scene who really let the side down, since otherwise we're a very inclusive bunch and not prejudice against anyone. Myrkur is an easy target because of her past career choices. You'd think they'd instead praise any artist who makes the jump from pop to black metal of all things and maybe they would have if she'd played generic kvlt BM, instead of taking it to atypical places. But even if she had made generic music they'd still focus on her modelling career. The late Jill Janus of Huntress was also an easy target for these people. She committed suicide two years ago. She brought this kind of slutty witch persona to her stage presence, so of course arseholes attacked her for it, as well as her past career as a topless DJ. Fan testimony always said that off stage she was down to Earth and a total sweetheart. She had mental health issues which are believed to be what led to her suicide. I always have wondered if the keyboard warriors and their hurtful comments played a role as well. For my money Jill was one of the best heavy metal singers to gain a following in the 2010s and Huntress's debut album remains a favourite modern heavy metal album of mine. I think all women in metal bands have probably experienced misogyny at some point in their lives. For musicians it never has anything to do with the music they actually make. As a female fan I have experienced it as well.
