Exactly my situation; I do not like the fantasy type, dragons & dungeons type so I do not get the hype. And it's sometimes annoying for me to hear people babbling about it.

Well, it's more dungeons than dragons. The main element of the plot is the political and military conflict through the continent in which the story is set.
If there are some traditional heroic fantasy elements (yes, there are dragons, but they appear in the 4 season, as "toddlers", if I can say), the writing is focused on the relationships between the warring families, and most of the deaths are due to the human hand, not some supernatural being.

There's lots of gay wiener too. Haven't you seen the South Park episodes "Black Friday","A Song Of Ass And Fire", and "Titties And Dragons"? Cartman makes Butters watch GoT, and butters is most disturbed by the amount of wiener in it, and George RR Martin makes a speech all about wiener too.

My favourite all time TV show. It has stuck reasonably closely to the books at times, and there's still half a book which hasn't made it to screen yet. I love that it has such high production values, and the way it looks. Each city or keep is definitely a new location and not just a re-dressed set. Some of the characters are a bit cardboard-cut-out-ish, but that's down to Martin's awful writing, and Lena Heady's hopeless acting. Otherwise, TV doesn't get much better.

Just a warning for anyone who reads the books and decides to try any more George RR Martin books: avoid his first novel Dying Of The Light. It's fucking awful! It was written in 1977 and is sci-fi rather than fantasy, and it seems to hit just about every SF cliche of the era, the plot really drags, and the main character is such an asshole you can't feel any sympathy or connection with him. The setting and the initial premise are quite good, but after the scene setting chapter at the beginning of the book, it just goes downhill from there.

Martin ain't a good writer at all style-wise, imo. He's got a knack for weaving plots and intrigues that keep people involved in the story, though. The way he achieves all that is often questionable but well, whatever works is fine, right? ;)

I am going to sound bitter and maybe you're not going to like it, but I really hate the way western/english/american fantasy and sci-fi has dominated the market to the point where much better writers from, say, eastern Europe (Wink) struggle to even get noticed despite being cherished by their fanbases for decades. They often get critically acclaimed and all - for instance Stanisław Lem is considered one of the greatest philosophers and sci-fi writers of the last century but he somehow remains unknown to western audience. And well, the communism is mostly to be blamed for that, but I still find it sad.

But back to topic. Was the 5th season any good?

EDIT: By saying "much better writers", I didn't mean they're better than all western writers, just better than some that got huge recognition despite not being so good. Most of my favourite authors are French-speaking or English-speaking, so don't get me wrong there ;d

The only non-Song of Ice and Fire GRRM book I've read is Fevre Dream. While I enjoyed the story it took me quite a while to actually get through and it's a fraction of the size of ASoIaF novels. I have a few more of his books in the house but not read them. I know that I have The Armageddon Rag and Tuf Voyaging at the very least. I might have Dying of the Light as well, honestly can't remember.

Not really sure what makes a writer really great style wise but I never had a problem with GRRM regarding the ASoIaF books. Might be an interesting debate to have sometime.

And sorry Bartosz, I can't say I've heard of Stanisław Lem. Embarrassed I will say though that Andrzej Sapkowski's (translated, of course) work has been some of the best page turners I've read in a long time.

As for the 5th season, I enjoyed it, but the deviations from the source happen more and more as characters get cut (including POV characters!), merged, or the story advances beyond the novels. It's still recognisable though, which is the main thing,

He seems to give human emotions and feelings a physical presence in his descriptions of the surface of Solaris. George Clooney should be shot for that turd of a movie he made out of it.

In general I avoid fantasy like the plague, unless it's Terry Pratchett. I had bad experiences with DragonLance about 30 years ago, and only just recently read The Hobbit, which has put me off fantasy yet again.

I thought the 5th series was great. To me, GoT seems to be getting better as it goes. A lot of people were unhappy at some of the deaths, and are looking for unlikely resurrections in the next series. They need to get over it! I knew what was coming cos I've read the books, but they were still somewhat shocking. I'm looking forward to series six because there's very little left from the books to cover.

Yeah well, it's not like he's terrible. It sounded a little bit like I thought he was though, sorry about that LOL

As for Lem, I don't think you should feel bad for not knowing someone who couldn't get their books into the western market because of the iron curtain that separated us from others until 1990s. I strongly recommend checking him out even though I've heard the translation of Solaris is not very good. I think they translated it into English from the french version, not the original one. Not sure about that. Anyway Solaris is the one to read first even if the quality of its translation is questionable.

Sapkowski is very good too and he is a good stylist as well. I think his style has been reasonably well conveyed in the english translation, for a change ;) I'm glad you like him because he's one of my favourite fantasy writers overall. And literally the only good one in Poland, at least right now, not sure about the 90s when he was actually writing any good books. We have many fantasy writers but most of them suck.

Wow, you made my day, sir :)

Also, good to know that the translation is not bad, after all.

Pleased to be of service.Smile Just remembered I tried watching the 1972 movie version of Solaris. Had to give up though, because it had no subtitles. From everything I've every read it is supposed to be far superior to the other movie.

I've actually seen the Clooney Solaris. Didn't think much of it from what I recall of that film.

It was directed by a russian director Andrei Tarkovsky - Lem is reaaally big in Russia. Lem himself hated all adaptations, and there were three: Tarkovsky's, the clooney one and one more but I don't remember who made it.

The Clooney one (it was directed by Steven Soderbergh if I remember correctly) hasn't much in common with the book apart from the title.

I thought it was great up to the last season and then it sucked.

Some dude on YouTube narrated an alternative final season and i wish he wouldl've finished the series because they pretty much bungled the entire woven plot system that worked very well for the most part.

The BBC Merlin series was cool
