I beat this game yesterday:

Resident Evil 5 (2009)

...and started playing this one:

Viking: Battle for Asgard (2008)

RE5 was a great game, but slightly disappointing compared to RE4. The focus was much more on action, and it feels a bit too much like every other game out there rather than anything all that unique. Still, it was fun and the story was excellent. Smile

As for Viking... so far so good! I'm a big fan of these sort of hack-and-slash action/RPG's, and since I picked it up for a whopping $5, it was probably worth it. Thumbs Up

Been playing Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube at my g-ma's house.  Ice Climbers are way better than I thought they'd be.  Also, unlocked Falco.  I like Falco more than Fox for the simple reason that he sounds less obnoxious when he does his moves.

I recently purchased Resident Evil: Director's Cut for the Playstation 1, and I've been playing that lately. A damn challenging and confusing game, but a lot of fun. Figuring out the puzzles without the help of walkthroughs is an immensely satisfying feeling. Approve

Well, after a lunch with Blizzard, basically inspired me to make a game.  Thinking it's going to mainly utilize a grappling hook which can other stun enemies, bring you to a target location, or fetch items.

Already started on the basic story line, but still figuring out what program to use, any recommendations?

It is going to be 3D, so I was thinking about Unity, although making a 2D prototype wouldn't be bad on Game Maker or something.

I have absolutely NO background in game making. I've been thinking about making a 2D action RPG in Game Maker for quite a while, though... if you also decide to make something using that software, we could potentially help each other with using Game Maker. The software looks a bit confusing. LOL

I've just spent the best part of three years studying gaming development. I am not familiar with this game maker software but never assume that making a game is easy. You'd be in for a nasty shock. It's not something you can charge headlong into making even if you have an idea in your head, you have to do a lot of planning beforehand. That may seem a waste of time when you are starting out but believe me it is for your own benefit.

I saw Unity mentioned, its pretty good, but of course they reserve the best features for the pro version so unless you have a spare $1500 lying around, you better stick to the free version. It's good for starting out with 3D gaming though and for working without massive financial backing.

i understand the depth of the project, im a CS student Cool
my comment was more aimed at, from a programmers standpoint, i would guess that the language isnt too hard to pick up.

ive made a couple small games, and had them turn out to be more work than i thought they were going to be for sure. (mainly because i kept changing my mind )

Moving from one programming language to another isn't too hard, the keywords are normally more or less the same in my experience. Programming is just one aspect of game development though. You also have to think about graphics, whether they be 2D or 3D, animation (again 2D or 3D), sound, gameplay and story, which is actually the most important aspect of the whole game.

Also changing your mind is the very reason why you need to take time to plan, plan and then plan some more. Sketch what graphics will look like before you make them. Write your quests, missions and story etc before you even think about coding them.

Oh, you want to make a little group thing?  That would be pretty cool. Smile

So how would we start this thing off?  Public blog or something just to get down some ideas and whatnot?

And just so you know, this is the basic, basic things I had in mind for it:

-Going to be a total of a 20 minute experience
-Starts with a tutorial, ends with a boss fight
-Has enemy encounters and puzzles in between (maybe even sometimes combined Shocked) mostly utilizing the grappling hook I stated before.

Believe me, I thought more in depths about it, but these are, like I said, my basics.  I can go into more detail later.
