Not necessarily, something can be mostly ignored without being unheard of or belittled.

It shouldn't mean that to anyone and I don't get why a lot of people think it does. To be underrated, you have to be rated somewhere first. |

To me, underrated does NOT mean unheard of.

While I wouldn't say some of these are criminally underrated, there are some I feel need a mention here.
Cruachan (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/cruachan.aspx) - one of the earliest folk metal bands, yet often overlooked in favour of newer acts. Sonic Pulsar (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/sonic-pulsar.aspx) - more simply unknown than underrated. Good prog metal with a spacy ambience. Vainglory (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/vainglory.aspx) - Actually their first album isn't too special but the second is a gem. Female fronted speed metal. Forest Silence (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forest-silence.aspx) - Ambient black metal act that also made some dark ambient demo's. Probably not well known because they simply haven't released much, their lone full-length was released in 2006. Whyzdom (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/whyzdom.aspx) - Symphonic Metal that breaks the typical clichs of the genre. Psypheria (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/psypheria.aspx) - quite unusual death metal.

Here are nine, none are super obscure, I just think they are underrated:
Dozer - Stoner Jetplane Landing - Emo/Post hardcore/Whatever. Their second album is amazing. Dew Scented - Slayer clones with Phil Anselmo vocals and a bit of Death, but awesome. Carpathian Forest - Black Metal Flaw - pure Nu Metal, but awesome. The Grand Astoria - Prog with Stoner vibes and a bit of thrash. Rishloo - Brilliant alternative-prog, A Perfect Circle/Tool comparisons always made. Primevil - Only one album, but it is amazing Mushroomhead - So good, not often given a fair chance. Faith No More plus Ministry times Marilyn Manson. |

I haven't heard of half of those (proving your point, I guess), but I have to agree with you on Ark. I was really impressed by both of their albums. Something new and fresh, it's a shame they didn't make any more music.

Five underrated bands (enumeration does not reflect any ranking - just there for practical purposes):
1. Lethal: power metal band who released Programmed back in 1990 - a power prog album completely with odd time signatures, soaring vocals and conceptual lyrics. 2. Brats: punk band turned metal band, and would eventually morph into Mercyful Fate. They released 1980 back in 1980, a quite forward-looking album, featuring Hank Shermann and Michael Denner on guitars. 3. Vigilante: Japanese power metal band whose music is both sophisticated and accessible - sort of a Fates Warning meets Queensrche. 4. Thine: dark, progressive gothic metal - and acquired taste, but actually quite good. 5. Count Raven: old school Swedish doom metal - I think that their rebut album Storm Warning is hugely underrated.
Yeah, I have one of their albums actually. Found it in the discount section of a local music store. |

1. Tad Morose
A band that deserved much better, always made good music, intelligent heavy/power with progressive influences. 2. Morgana Lefay Think of Savatage meets Pantera (Dimebag) and you got this band; criminally underrated if you ask me. 3. Tunnelvision Awesome progressive metal, disbanded after 2 great albums, such a shame. 4. Ark They deserved more recognition, their 2 albums are better than most prog-metal albums released in the last decade or so IMO 5. Freak Kitchen I can't believe this band never made it big as they should have 6.Veni Domine Take some epic doom and give it a traditional heavy metal punch plus a progressive treatment every once in a ehile and you got Veni Domine. Warmly recommended 7. Poverty's No Crime great progressive metal from Germany. They deserved to be at least as famous as Vanden Plas for example 8.Conception Great stuff, a band that deserved more recognition and appreciation 9. Enchant criminally under-appreciated in my opinion. Period 10. Sieges Even I find them underrated although they have a little bit of fame, kinda like a cult band.
