Could anyone reccomend me some Doom Metal albums? Been listening to some Candlemass, Krux, Reverend Bizzare, Pentagram and Acid King on Last fm/Youtube lately and I like what I've heard so far... But I'd like to know what would be a good buy. Big smile

Reverend Bizarre's last studio album III: So Long Suckers is great.

Swallow the Sun mixes doom and death and whatnot and does it wonderfully. Their debut The Morning Never Came is probably the doomiest of their albums, but they seem to be just getting better all the time.

The Morningside are an amazing doom/death band from Russia. Post-Metallish riffs and heavy structures, all wrapped up in a nature based facade. If you like Agalloch, you will like them.

I'm no expert on the genre, but Electric Wizard is some damn good Stoner/Doom metal.

You've already mentioned Candlesmass, but I'll just recommend a bunch of their albums anyway which I think are absolutely brilliant: "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", "Ancient Dreams", "Tales of Creation", "King of the Grey Islands", "Death magic Doom". I'd also recommend Solitude Aeturnus' "Into the Depths of Sorrow", "Beyond the Crimson Horizon" (my fave), and "Alone". Candlemass and Solitude Aeuturnus are more epically inclined. I guess I'd also recommend "Mandylion" by The Gathering, although it is probably categorized as gothic metal these days. The same goes for Paradise Lost's "Draconian Times".  If you like really heavy stuff, then you might be interested in Cathedral's debut album "Forest of Equilibrium" or Winter's "Into Darkness" or in the work of Saturnus. There's also Nortt's extremely dark funeral doom.

Have you heard Bison B.C.?  They're Thrash / Doom, very cool.  Saw them live with Shadows Fall.  Guys are cool, from Vancouver.  They're on touring with High On Fire, and with Priestess.

here's a link with their 2 albums, http://www.loudtrax.com/Artist/Bisonbc

and here's a You Tube link with my favorite track from them:

Here's one for you collctors of rare items: Morfeus - they were an underground doom band in the 90s and released a couple of demo tapes. Eventually they changed to melodic death metal and changed their name to Mindmare (by that time there were no original members left). Mindmare are still active.

Lol.

I have a couple recommendations of some lesser-known bands.

My first would be Giant Squid, a progressive-doom metal band from California, and a personal favorite of mine.  They're relatively new, and just released their second album (The Ichthyologist) last year, although I would recommend their first album, Metridium Fields.  Imagine a mix between sludgy-doom riffs, progressive experimentation, Serj Tankian-esque vocals, and some post-rock tendencies with longer compositions and echoey guitars all leading up to epic, doomy finales.  Check it out:

Some other good songs: Versus the Siren, Ampullae of Lorenzini

Another favorite of mine is a German band called Ahab, who play a kind of funeral doom metal that's incredibly massive and heavy, with slow-churning riffs, low guitars, and deep, gutteral vocals with lots of oceanic themes.  Highly recommended for more traditional doom metal fans.

Also, if you aren't listening to Sunn O))) yet, you should do that too.

Confessor are probably not for newcommers to the genre and its the kind of band that youll either love or hate, but I definitely think they are a worthy recommendation: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/confessor.aspx?ac=conf - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/confessor.aspx?ac=conf

Oh and if no one else has suggested them yet Id recommend Veni Domine too: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/veni-domine.aspx - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/veni-domine.aspx . Imagine a mix between Candlemass and Queensrche. slightly progressive doom metal.

There's a band called Celestial Season  who managed to produce one excellent album called "Solar Lovers" before sort of imploding. It treads the line between depressive doom and stoner doom. That's a pretty great one.

If you want something super depressing, you can try Esoteric. Nightmarish stuff.

or The Third and the Mortal:

or Theatre of Tragedy:

I'm not too familliar with doom metal, but i really have to point out 2 amazing lesser known doom metal bands:

-Black Sun Aeon (Their first album Darkness Walks Beside Me is a pure masterpiece, their second album Routa is solid)

-October Tide, side project of vocalist from Katatonia. Their first album 12 days of rain is outstanding, other albums are great as well. Growls on 12 days of rain are one of the best I ever heard.

Chicago based traditional doom outfit Stone Magnum.  lots of talent, brutal heaviness and darkened somberness - cant beat this one, the total slow package.

Here is one that has seemed to grow on me after awhile - Switzerlands Requiem Eternam.  The band mixes a sort of heavy Goth Metal with some insidiously heavy Doom Metal and touches of gore to create something that comes out on the good side of pretty good.

The album Songs for another Age is full of deeply disturbing images that take root in the heaviness - painting a picture of pure darkness with shadings of hopeless grey.  The result is a album that grows on you, and shatters what little serenity you have in your mind..

I gave this a 7 the first time I had reviewed it, now I must up it to about a 8.5 or so.  Bleakness is an art, and Requiem Eternam is the master artist.  The album is not recorded perfect... by in hindsight... it helps in some ways.

Very well then.

Anyway, the big one he's probably missing would have to be Esoteric.  Weird-ass funeral doom, yet also really really good.

Other ones worth checking out include one more influential act called Funeral

the enigmatic Ea if you're looking for something a little more modern sounding

and Colosseum, another modern sounding one

Awesome stoner doom from Belgium. Their first LP is available from Acid Cosmonaut Records, and it's heavy.

Surprised nobody mentioned these guys yet. Great stoner/doom/noise outfit from Chicago.

From Spain, actually. The lyrics of this particular one are quite awesome.

Destructive doom, your typical stoner fare.

Monstrous stoner doom from one of metal's biggest countries, Sweden.

Ukrainian stoner doom, and potentially one of my favorite band names.
