Death is one of my all-time favorite bands (and Symbolic is in my top 15 albums ever released). I always feel like Chuck gets less attention than he deserves, especially considering how much he innovated extreme metal. My favorite would be Symbolic (with the other 3 albums in their late-period not far behind), but I know many people who prefer the more primitive thrash/death style of their early albums.

So vote on! Evil Smile

I have a soft spot and great admiration for Death and Chuck Schuldiner.
I started following his music with the release of Spiritual Healing and have followed him since until the end, including Control Denied albums.
To this day, Human is the album that has the heaviest and most substantial impact on me, not least because of the liner notes: "This is more than an album for me. It is a statement; it is revenge"

As for favourite songs:
Altering The Future
Suicide Machine
Trapped in a Corner

(there are more of course but those are the three that would always be up there).

I love his quotes like that in each of their booklets. I don't know if you read what Paul and Sean wrote for influences in the booklet for Human, but I find it interesting that they cite Frank Zappa and Chick Corea among their exceptionally short list of influences. It just shows how open to experimentation this band always has been Thumbs Up

The Sound of Perseverance.

The entire album is amazing, especially "Voice of the Soul."
It also features a great cover of JP's "Painkiller."

I hate the cover of Painkiller Dead

That drops the album from a masterpiece rating IMO. It would have been such a fantastic tribute to Death if not for that cover.

REALLY!?Confused

Maybe it's just its placement at the very end.
It could be more suited in the middle, but I love that song.
It's a fantastic tribute to Judas Priest.

I also like it, but i do realise many people hate it (the tr00er, bigger the hate). Anyway, Remember that it is a bonus Jeff. It is like depreciating an expensive dinner due to the quality of the coffe they served in your way out. Wink LOL

That is very true, Caio. Big smile

The vocals just kill me on that song; way too high pitched for Chuck. The soloing is pretty good, however.

Too high pitched? You obviously never listened to the Judas Priest version, hahahahahaha LOL.

I have indeed heard the Priest version.... but there's no growling in that version. Death metal vocals that sound like Satanic-black metal screams, but an entire octave higher than that annoy the crap out of me! LOL

I voted on "Human". Perhaps, I think directionality from the first stage and technical respect to have been established by this album.

Human, because of the precedence it set.

I'm surprised that Human is running away with this so much. I was almost sure that Symbolic would have completely blown the other albums away. Especially considering the group of prog fans that populate most of the forum right now.

Oh well, they're both 5 star albums from me.

My personal favorite is Symbolic.  One sign of a great album is when I cannot choose a favorite song.  I'm pretty sure each composition was my favorite at one point in time.  It has a crisp, clean production that doesn't take away from the heaviness of the songs, and showcases some of Gene Hoglan's most interesting playing.

Human comes as a close second, but was probably the most important album of theirs in terms of the band's overall progression.  If the band stopped after 3 albums, I probably wouldn't have been into them.

I'm disappointed with the lack of love for Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy. I'd say those two albums were the peak of Death. After that they went downhill with Spiritual Healing but they picked up with Human. I never really liked anything they released after that.

Definitely in both circles...Wink I don't know if you remember this poll ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=147 - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=147 ), but Death didn't even get mentioned as one of the death metal giants! They do generate much discussion, but they aren't often recognized as being one of the best death metal bands....just sayin'....

It's Leprosy for me all the way.
Love the shoddy production, love the rawness of the riffing, even though the progressive sensibilities are still present and, truthfully, love the fact it's faster that most of their later stuff.
What a great band all round though.

Jeff, glad to see you kick up a fuss about this band, they truly are something special

Furthermore, how the devil are you man?

And yep, had to vote for Symbolic, followed by Human, ITP, Spiritual Healing and then the rest.

Individual Thought Patterns

Always has been my favorite, and all these years later it still is.

Followed by Sound of Perseverance, then Leprosy. But I love the whole Death discog. One of my all time favorite bands.
