I know that quite a few of us on MMA are now also on List Challenges and making lists. I thought I'd make a thread for us to post our latest lists here rather than spread them out on other threads.

As a prolific list maker (1341 and counting!) I probably won't post every list I make here, but my latest ones can always be found at:  https://www.listchallenges.com/profile/293489/published-lists" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/profile/293489/published-lists

Got 5 on there, though I've been meaning to check out Double Indemnity for a while now. Just need to pick up a copy at some point.

Haven't watched Who Wants to be a Millionaire in years as I haven't had cable in a long time. The British version is different though right?

Not sure how it compares to other versions. But the new ones we get have Jeremy Clarkson as the host and are generally quite comedic along with being a quiz like anything that man is involved in.

This is my most extensive list that isn't to do with metal. But I only have three lists in total.

https://www.listchallenges.com/the-heavy-metal-cats-favourite-animated-movies

My other one is small and is just how I rank the main Star Wars movies.

Already did this a while back, though my score was out of date. Currently at 76/100.

I want to wait to make a movie list until I've watched through all the movies I own but have yet to watch.

15 and counting for Ghibli.

I still have to watch Ocean Waves, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbors the Yamadas, The Cat Returns, Ponyo and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. The last one of which is probably the most interesting one remaining to me, though I may watch them all for completionists sake since they're all on Netflix right now.

I can recommend all the movies released after Ponyo, especially the last three.

Since I've been on a Japanese movie kick for a while, I made a RYM custom chart with (hopefully) all the Japanese specific genres on it and posted a list of the top 100 movies.

16/100, with a few that I haven't seen yet but I own and/or have been meaning to watch. Surprised to see so many modern movies, can't imagine any of those holding up decades from now like the classics.

Deleted it because I didn't want to offend anyone who loves it in a discussion, but here goes. I don't like those two movies either, but the worst for me is Mad Max: Fury Road. I couldn't find any plot, and from what I remember they go right back to where they started at the beginning of the movie (Which made me question why they drove around so much in the first place). Didn't even like the action either, the constant slowing down and speeding up was disorienting and just made it feel like someone kept switching between the rewind and fastforward button on the remote.

Maybe I went in with too high expectations because everyone was raving about it, but I can't think of a film that I've been more bored and confused by. Actually kind of reminds me of 2001 in some ways, in the sense that it feels like more effort was put into the effects than constructing an interesting and entertaining plot. That's how I usually feel about many modern movies I've seen in general, more work seems to be put into effects and making it look great than the story and characters.

I've only seen it (and the earlier movies) the once. I remember liking it but not much actually about it. I never thought much of the original Mad Max personally, I only got into the series with the second one, which I remember liking more than Fury Road. I've been meaning to watch them all again though.

Action movies like them can be fun and all but I often find (and this is especially true the newer they are) that they are very thin a plot and full of bad guys who can't shoot straight.

I haven't seen a whole lot of action films, but from what I have seen I tend to enjoy them most when they don't take themselves too seriously. I really liked the first Kingsmen (Was disappointed by the second though) and Face-Off is a lot of fun in its over the top ridiculousness. The latter makes me wonder why Nicholas Cage isn't cast in more absurdist comedies, he'd be perfect.

Face/Off! I haven't watched that for years. I'll have to add it to my re-watch stack and hope the DVD works (since I never watched it off of the DVD, only picked it up after loving the film on TV).

Nicolas Cage is one of those actors that is in so many films that aren't that good that it's sometimes easy to dismiss him as a hack, but he's got quite a few gems in his filmography that he's great in, like Mandy, Raising Arizona and of course, Face/Off.

Probably some sort of legal rights thing going on because it has a Prime Video page in the UK but is unavailable to buy even on that. Just says 'Our agreements with the content provider don’t allow purchases of this title at this time.'

^ I wanted to use more than ten sources, but it was surprisingly hard to locate usable lists to include for it. Some sites had some real oddities as their number one which gave that title 100 points, which is how that Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge movie (which I've never even heard of) got in there so high).

I'm also surprised by a few movies that got totally slated by the ten source lists. You won't believe how few points titles like Terminator 2, The Big Lebowski, Seven and Chinatown ended up with.

7.

But really, Cars 2 and Dad's Army?LOL That's pushing it! We just rewatched Dad's Army the other day, and I gotta say, they did a good job of it.

Also the movies on that list: I went to see Moonraker with my old man when it came out. I must have been 7 or 8. We'd wanted to go to the first Star Trek movie, but the line for it went round the block! Having seen it since, we went to the right movie for me for the time. I wouldn't have appreciated it at that age.

They actually are though. Cars 2 is a total spy spoof (at least Mator's storyline is) and the 2016 Dad's Army movie is all about finding a wartime spy. It counts. Wink

I'd start with Yojimbo in particular, not just because it's my favorite movie, but it's a fantastic samurai action with a comedic element.

Yojimbo is a brilliant movie. Often underrated next to Seven Samurai, which is also very good but also very long and perhaps not the best intro movie to Japanese cinema.

If you prefer something in the crime/noir line, Kurosawa's Stray Dog and High and Low also come recommended.

From other director's Harakiri is also excellent. As is The Human Condition trilogy.

If you're open to anime, there's also some great titles available. Some of them definitely not for the kiddies.

Only seen 4 of those, but there's quite a few I've been wanting to see for a while. Aren't some of those more horror than sci-fi though? I would've thought movies like Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde would have science fiction as a secondary rather than a primary.

Having not seen them I can't say. A lot of those old horror movies were considered sci-fi for the time though. The book for Frankenstein was even released in the Sci-Fi Masterworks Collection.

At the end of the day when I make a list from another source, I follow the source best I can, even when two movies I thought were pretty damn boring are ranked as number 1 and 2.

To be fair, I haven't seen them either (though I own the 1920 Jekyll and Hyde in a silent horror boxset), guess I'm just used to seeing those referred to as horror more than sci-fi. Though before more action/adventure-based sci-fi became more prevalent, horror and sci-fi did seem to crossover a lot, so probably just has to do with the time like you said.

Of course with RYM it is possible that the tagging is leftover relics from the time when films didn't have the option of secondaries, but that's been changed for years so its doubtful. I too would more expect to see many of these on horror lists over sci-fi.

Frankenstein definitely would fit the bill for sci-fi.  Some of the H.G. Wells stuff arguably doesn't have enough of the "science" part, but it was considered scifi at the time it was written.

I have 11, but many more there are on my watchlist.  It can be hard to find these 1950s movies for a reasonable price.

I had 13 myself on this one, with a couple more lined up to watch. There's quite a few on there I'd still to see.

Old movies in general tend to cost most to obtain here in the UK. There are sometimes some on Prime and often they are on the normal TV stations, but the quality is atrocious most of the time and it's nothing to do with the movie being old, because an old movie can be made to look fantastic. Some of these look of a quality lower than standard definition.

5, but with several I've been wanting to see. War of the Worlds and Day the Earth Stood Still being two of those, but every time I go to the thrift store (where I get most movies) I get excited for a split-second when I see them on the shelf but then I quickly realize it's the remakes and lose all interest.

Also want to see the first Godzilla movie, I've only seen the hilariously bad Godzilla vs Megalon through the MST3K episode which is one of my favorites. I've heard the first is great though beyond cheese.

I'm becoming very interested in 50s sci-fi, but I've also seen hardly anything I put on that list.

I own a copy of the 50s Invasion of the Body Snatchers which is marred by an aspect ratio that makes the picture look minimised in the centre of the TV screen with big black borders around every side. Had a couple of older DVDs like that where it looks like they were made to fit older TV screen standards around when DVDs first came out. Looks awful now. It's a good movie though. I think I prefer the 70s one though.

I've also seen The Thing From Another World but elected not to keep the DVD after watching it. A Good movie, but a rare case where the remake completely blows it out of the water. It's possible I'll re-obtain it one day though as part of the HMV Premium Collection blu-rays.

Several movies I want to watch there are: Them!, The Day the Earth Stood Still (seen the remake, don't remember much about it though), Forbidden Planet, The Fly (also seen the remake which was very good), and The War of the Worlds (which may well be the best version out there as I understand it).

I've seen quite a bit of 50's sci-fi, but mostly the incredibly cheesy ones courtesy of MST3K/Rifftrax, so haven't gotten to many that are supposedly good beyond the so bad it's good factor. Do you watch Cinemassacre on Youtube at all? I really enjoy his videos on the many eras and genres of film, and have been introduced to great stuff that I probably would've never found otherwise (Particularly surrealist Jan Švankmajer). Here's a video regarding the topic at hand though:

I hadn't heard of him before but that was a good video. I've subbed to him to check out more. He's already increased my interest in a few movies he mentioned and made me think that maybe I shouldn't have got rid of The Thing From Another World.

Older horror movies are another interest I want to explore more. Black and white ones mainly. I re-watched The Haunting (1963) last night after not taking it in properly the first time due to tiredness, and it was brilliant, very tense and atmospheric with the black and white picture (especially when watching on blu-ray - I don't think about people credit just how stylish black and white looks in HD or better).

I've got 19 so far myself. Not actually sure on the UK availability of some of these, especially the older they are. There's some German Expressionism films I put on there that I've had my fingers crossed for a while that Masters of Cinema can get a hold of for a restored blu-ray release with translated intertitles. They did The Golem (1920) not that long ago which I've picked up and that's an excellent silent horror movie.

Just passed 250000 users of my lists on LC. Cool

Still stuck at #49 on the list makers chart though. I'm a few hundred off breaking #48, but every time I get close LC seems to share like three lists from the same user and give them a massive boost and I'm suddenly lucky not to knocked out of the top 50. Unhappy

Keep trying to think up new ideas that may be interesting. One of these days LC may deign to share one of my actual metal lists which was what the profile was meant to all be about originally. But I'm not holding my breath on that. The best used metal lists remains the original Trad list currently @ 412 users.

Here's another recent one that isn't doing too well. I guess it's too niche. But hey, you all can get a small look around my home county.

40 out of 70 for me. I saw many of those old black and white ones from the 30's in particular when I was teenager and there was always a Saturday night double bill starting around 11pm. I've probably seen a few more to be honest that didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

I haven't seen many of those, but I can easily recommend Nosferatu. Probably the most overall foreboding feeling movie I've seen, and it being silent just increases that.

If you're specifically after a horror film of any age I'll second the Nosferatu rec. If you're prefer not to go for a silent film though then a couple of gems are Them! and The Thing From Another World. I'd especially go for the latter if you've seen Carpenter's version. I made the mistake recently of selling my copy on which I quickly regretted and ended up rebuying it. Maybe I was subconsciously looking for an excuse to upgrade to blu-ray.

If you do decide to go for Nesferatu make sure it's a quality restoration with translated intertitles - there's some rough versions out there I believe. I myself own the Masters of Cinema blu-ray release which is probably as good as you'll get for a movie that old.

I'm open to pretty much anything but horror is one of my usual go to genres for movies. My knowledge of old movies, not counting Disney classics I grew up with on VHS, is limited to maybe half a dozen films right now. I'm open silent movies (always felt I should watch Metropolis for sci-fi movies - ironically Lang's M is one of the six I know I have seen that's from before 1960, but I haven't seen Metropolis), so I probably look into options for Nosferatu.

Oh and you must indeed watch Metropolis if you like sci-fi. But it's even more important to make sure you get a restored version with that one (even then a lot of the film is damaged beyond the ability to repair). You need the Masters of Cinema DVD or Blu-Ray to make sure you get as much as the movie as is still around to see. And be careful not to get the older Masters of Cinema DVD from before a lot of the missing material was found. A sensational movie even with the extant damage to the film.

Got 7 on there

Also, I've mentioned it before and I'll mention it again. Best anime movie:

The Lupin series has a zany and fast-paced tone that's really separates itself from more recent anime. This was the only Lupin movie that Miyazaki directed, and best of his films imo. And if anyone who watches it enjoys, I highly recommend both the first and second series' of cartoons from the 70's. The American dub especially (for the movie as well), as the voice acting fits perfectly with the characters.

Anyway, I've condensed this into a Top 100 list here (Saw included):  http://www.listchallenges.com/adams-current-top-100-horror-movies" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/adams-current-top-100-horror-movies

This was actually difficult to decide what to include. I've seen more horror movies than any other genre, but so few are what I'd consider even solid, let alone actual gems. I don't think it corresponds to my ratings completely - seems to be the case that I remember some more fondly that I have a 3.5 on better than I do a 4.0. Still need to balance the old ratings out I guess.

Couple of other recent lists here that aren't doing too well for me, which kinda sucks course I put a lot of effort into these ones.

Only 16 for me. There are some there I really should have seen that for whatever reason I've never got around to.

Some new lists:

These three form of the start of a series, the RYM top 100 movies for users from different countries. So far I've got UK, USA and Canada.

http://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-uk-the-top-100-movies" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-uk-the-top-100-movies
http://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-usa-the-top-100-movies" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-usa-the-top-100-movies
http://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-canada-the-top-100-movies" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-music-canada-the-top-100-movies

I got 70 on UK and Canada but only 63 on USA.

Also, RYM's top 50 Satire movies (with a minimum of 500 ratings). Just got a share from LC on this one so getting more users than normal:  http://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-musics-50-greatest-satire-movies" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-musics-50-greatest-satire-movies

Only 19 on that myself. I still haven't seen Clockwork Orange.

RYM's top 100 foreign language movies:  http://www.listchallenges.com/highest-rated-foreign-language-movies-on-rate" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/highest-rated-foreign-language-movies-on-rate

32 for me. I've seen a lot of non-English films but not usually the sort RYM likes.

And a shorter, non RYM one to finish off this selection, hopefully this is a fair starting crash course in film noir:  http://www.listchallenges.com/25-essential-movies-to-get-a-start-in-film-noir" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/25-essential-movies-to-get-a-start-in-film-noir

Got 17 on the anime one. Still have my old copies of Pokemon 2000 and 4ever, been meaning to see how those hold up as an adult sometime.

Some arsehole is ripping off my lists on LC. May sound pretty but try to avoid the lists of the following person, they are aping my work right down to the list description, steamrollering their way into my ongoing list series (which prevents me from posting my own entries under those names on LC).

http://www.listchallenges.com/profile/436169" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/profile/436169

This is their latest rip-off (please don't support this person by using the list): https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-musics-50-greatest-melodrama-movies

Ripped off from lists of this series:  http://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-musics-50-greatest-drama-movies-2020" rel="nofollow - https://www.listchallenges.com/rate-your-musics-50-greatest-drama-movies-2020
