Imagine this... every member of MMA is given ONE album that they can rate with 6 out of 5 stars. No, that technically doesn't make any sense, and I'm not suggesting that it gets implemented, but if it were true...

What single album in your collection would you consider to be "better than perfect"? Wink

For me I cannot choose. I battle constantly between Tool's Lateralus and Between the Buried and Me's Colors.

On one hand, Lateralus is so intertwined with deep lyrical themes and concept. It's pretty much amazing all the thought the boys from Tool put into this record.

But the same thing can be said about Colors. The creativity inspires me every time I listen to it, and there's brilliant technical musicianship all over it, whereas Lateralus is filled with atmosphere.

For this site's sake, I don't consider Lateralus a metal album. So Colors it is.

It would probably be Into the Everflow by Psychotic Waltz. I have such a long history with this album and Ive listened to Into the Everflow literally hundreds of times and Im still not tired of the album.

Great thread Jeff.

Without hesitation I chose this album -

Yes it's live, yes it was tweaked afterwards, yes it wasn't the full gig and yes probably a few other things but...

It sums up everything that was metal, is metal and will always be metal; I introduce to you the godfathers of metal Big smile

Judas Priest - Unleashed In The East

I am not really sure what my all-time favorite metal album is.  There are some good ones listed above.  Ayreon's The Human Equation is definitely a favorite.  Metallica's Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All are all great candidates.  Dream Theater's Images and Words and Metropolis are both great albums.

In fact, could I divide the extra point between ten and make every Dream Theater album 5.1?

Taste is taste my friend. The way forward is to accept that people have different tastes and that they might not be equal to yours. Thats why its so interesting to read both positive and negative reviews on the same album. A negative review can sometimes be very educational for a hardcore fan while the positive review sometimes bring things to light that the critic hadnt thought of.

I think there is no album I would rate with six stars. Maybe Led Zeppelin III and IV out of sentimental attachment, I don't know. I guess I don't have one favorite album anymore. It used to be MAYH by Opeth and Lateralus but now I can't say they're are absolutely flawless. Is it normal?Confused

The sixes:

Metallica - Master of Puppets (consider this my one answer)
King Diamond - "Them"
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Flotsam and Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver (this one actually scored 6/5 in Kerrang! in 1986!)
Death - Individual Thought Patterns

...and for non-metal, Mr. Bungle - California

for me, it would be either:
Death's Symbolic
Amon Amarth's With Oden on our Side

Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle would have to me my first choice.

That said there's definitely a few that are equally deserving.

Anubis Gate - The Detached
Blind Guardian - Imaginations From the Other Side
Wuthering Heights - Far From the Madding Crowd
Epica - Design Your Universe

You know, I'm really not a big fan of either. I like Focus a bit more than Traced In Air, but they are both worth the same rating IMO. Maybe I'll have to give them both another shot in the future... I guess it's pretty strange that I don't adore Cynic considering how much I love Death, Atheist, Pestilence, etc.

Traced In Air isn't as raw or "death metalish" as Focus, but it's still fairly similar sound-wise. I may have to give that one another shot before the weekend ends. Smile

I used to dislike them, but after a while I realize how cool it actually is.  It gives it a whole new vibe and no one else does it and I think it works beautifully.  Jus' another thing original about them that I adore.  If you give it more of a chance you can get passed the vocals - I did!
