MMA Best of Year 2018 Voting Thread For 2018, MMA will post a Staff Picks for albums late December/early January (when it's ready), but we are still running our public vote as normal which will be published a little way into 2019 (around February 1st). Voting officially opens on January 1st however we are releasing the rules and voting thread now to give fair warning that it is happening. If you do make your votes before January 1st, don't worry, we will still count them. Who Can Vote? Anyone with an MMA account, from new members to admins. When is the Voting Deadline? The deadline for submitting your votes is February 1st 2019. You may edit your submission at any point up until the closing date. There is a little leeway for last minute edits, dependant on what time of the day we can look at the results. The vote only ends once an MMA admin posts in this thread saying that it is closed. After that point no new votes or edits will be counted. What Can I Vote For? You may vote for any release that is tagged as 2018 on Metal Music Archives with some restrictions: Release Sub-Genre: Non-Metal and Proto-Metal tagged releases may not be voted for. The latter is likely to only have been used for any archival releases that may have come out during the year. These are not be counted among the best 2018 albums. Metal Related tagged albums are permitted however. We expect voters to use their discretion with such albums and considered whether a Metal Related tagged release really deserves to be placed on a metal website's best of year list. Release Type: Live Album, Single, Boxset/Compilation, Demo, Promo/Other and Split (unless that split can be considered a full, unique record in its own right* and is not just random tracks taken from the contributor's other releases) may not be voted for. EP's are generally okay to vote for so long as they are made up entirely of new studio material. Ask an admin to verify a particular release if in doubt. You cannot vote for something that is not in our database at all. Additionally, while recording musicians are welcome to take part, you may not vote for any release in which you took a part in recording. Making Your Votes You may vote for up to 30 releases in your submission. There is no minimum, but it is preferable that you get as close to the maximum as you can without giving points away to releases that you don't actually like very much. Please only post one submission and edit it if you change your mind. We will work through adding everyone's votes from the start of this voting thread which means that your earliest submission will be the one that is counted. We will not go back and edit the one we have already taken if we encounter a second from the same member. Please lay your submission out in the following format only - others will not be counted. Artist – Release Artist – Release And so forth, where the album you list first is your top album of the year. To be perfectly clear, this means no numbering, no Release – Artist lists, no spaces between each line (your list should be a maximum of 30 lines long, one for each album) and no commentary on your choices, at least in line (you may talk about your choices separately to your heart's content). And especially important: no reverse lists even when the rest of this is taken into account: you don't want us to count your opinion in the wrong order and give the most points to your 30th ranked album instead of your first. Additionally, please only use the standard formatting settings (you're looking at them) that the forum uses. Believe it or not, this also can make the tallying take just that bit longer. Sticking to the requested format speeds up tallying the result considerably, so please be considerate and stick to it. Admins may edit the formatting before the tally but do not count on it! How Will the Submissions be Scored? We will be using a score range of 1 to 100 points, rewarding higher placed albums on submitted lists with more points. ^One tricky one, that would effect me directly: Between the Buried and Me did a two part release this year: One full length and one EP. I actually would have the EP ranked slightly higher, so should I just do one entry based on my rankings for that one, or is it fine to put both on the list? Lovebites are in a similar spot, but those are two completely separate releases, so I feel better about including both of theirs. |

It's fine to list EP's, especially if they're full of studio material unique to them. | I actually just realized, only the EP would make my list, anyway, so it's not the issue I thought it was. Anyway, I'll start my list up on my next post, so there's no distractions from it. The only thing I can possibly see changing, is the new Eternity's End could squeak in (then again, it's only releasing in Japan this year, so I'm not even sure if it would count anyway. It's so confusing when the same album gets released in two different years.) |

This is always tricky, but it will remain 2018 tagged here on account of the Japanese release being the first on a label that hasn't licensed the release from another label: according to their Facebook, they don't actually have a label in the US or Europe that has agreed to release the album yet. In other year's this has happened, such as with the first Vandroya if I recall correctly, the earlier Japanese release was licensed from another, primary, label. I'm just hoping that they A) digitally release it worldwide and B) it's made available for streaming worldwide. Both releases by Between The Buried And Me are technically considered full albums even if they are normally EP length for them. At least that's the only way i've seen it catalogued on multiple sites. -------------

It's the final day of voting. Early tomorrow I will close this thread and after that no new votes will be counted or edits able to be made. Please use this last day to make sure that you are happy with your lists. The presentation of the results will, as usual, be released either late tomorrow or during the next day, depending on how busy I am. Some final reminders before the count: Please make the tallying as easy as possible for me and make sure the list is presented exactly as requested in the first post. There are a few lists here that have already been edited slightly by myself for format but not all of them. It wasn't said, but they should also use the standard forum font (it looks like what you're reading now) and size. Believe it or not, it does slow the tallying down if you don't do this. Otherwise, remember that you should be listing your top album first, counting down to a maximum of thirty. A couple of you have been flagged as trying to vote for albums in Non-Metal or aren't here at all. While we have addressed some of the artist/release omissions so your votes can be counted, there are still a couple of things that some people need to address, which have been marked in your submission posts next to a 'admin reason for edit' note. Releases tagged as Non-Metal however will never be awarded any points. While such releases will be skipped during tally, it is in your best interest to remove them and perhaps put another release in your list that previously hadn't made the cut. If missing artists should be here you must suggest them today and we will prioritise adding them. We can't count them if they are not here by the time the vote is tallied though. Edit: And very important: please make sure that you have checked your entire list off against what is actually on the site. We are doing our best to make sure the site is up to date and all your selections are here, but this is much easier to do if you tell us about missing artists and releases.
