Concept albums... You can either love them or hate them LOL

Mine would have to be Scenes from a Memory, but Crimson comes in a close second.

I've got a few favorites. It might be a toss up between Fredrik Thordendal's Sol Niger Within, Pain of Salvation's Be, or Pig Destroyer's Prowler in the Yard.

Though if you are going by the loose definition of concept album, then BTBAM's Colors by far.

Many of King Diamond's concept albums are quite entertaining.  I really enjoyed "The Puppet Master" when it first came out.

Yes too many fans of Dream Theater! Kill 'em all!

Excuse me but I'm the only one who likes the album "A Pleasant Shade Of Grey" here? All the art metallers support only Dream Theater?

You're not alone. APSOG is easily one of my favorite Fates Warning albums.  Smile

I have the Awaken The Guardian re-issue with liner notes from Mike Portnoy where he states that Fates Warning were doing what Dream Theater were doing before Dream Theater. Wink

Tricky question, but if you asked about favourite concept discography I would say Cannibal Corpse. Conceptual as hell, no doubt about it.

But seriously, it must be MAYH or Still Life by Opeth. Riverside's trilogy as close second.

You know, I used to really dislike "new" Evergrey as well. Upon revisiting some of their albums recently, I like their newer stuff much more than I thought I did. Not as much as ISoT, but I think most of them are at-least above average. Smile

Deadwing was written as a story and I guess Wilson wanted to make a film to follow it but I guess that kind of went nowhere.

Most (if not all) already mentioned, but anyway:
  • Aquarius by Haken. Thumbs Up
  • Metropolis pt.2 by Dream Theater.
  • Still Life by Opeth.
  • Human Equation by Ayreon.
  • Seventh Son(...) by Iron Maiden

I also didn't know that Pain of Salvation's Remedy Lane and  Perfect Element pt.1 were concept albums Stern Smile but if that is the case, they definitely deserve mention too.

I'm sorry for bumping another old and irrelevant thread, but how is The Mantle a concept album?

Anyways, to answer the OP:

Fanisk: Noontide (there doesn't seem to be any lyrical theme, but the entire album musically flows as one conceptual piece so I'd say it counts)
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Sabbat (JPN): The Dwelling
Moonsorrow: Verisakeet
Edge of Sanity: Crimson
Edge of Sanity: Crimson II
Ulver: Nattens Madrigal
Ulver: Bergtatt
Opeth: Ghost Reveries
Opeth: Still Life
Moonsorrow: Kivenkantaja
Dream Theater: Scenes From a Memory
Queensryche: Operation: Mindcrime
Taranis: Kingdom
Porcupine Tree: Deadwing
Devin Townsend Project: Deconstruction
Porcupine Tree: Fear of a Blank Planet
Make a Change... Kill Yourself: s/t
Opeth: My Arms, Your Hearse
Sabbat (UK): Dreamweaver
Leviathan: The Tenth Sub-Level of Suicide
Devin Townsend: Ziltoid the Omniscient
Shadow Gallery: Tyranny

Probably others I'm forgetting, but whatever.

This is a concept album?  If so then I'm embarrassed, it's my favorite of their "later" efforts but I had no idea that it followed a specific concept.
