Subject: MMA Reviewer's Challenge April 2018 Scoring
Date Posted: 31 Mar 2018 at 2:46am
In this thread I shall be keeping track of the scores that each reviewer receives during the April Reviewer's Challenge. The event starts tomorrow, April 1st and will run across the whole month.

As a reminder, every reviewer is automatically entered into this event just by posting Older Release Reviews (2016 or older). The aim is for us to get as many unreviewed or minimally reviewed releases reviewed. The scoring system is as follows:

3 points for reviewing an unreviewed album.
2 points for reviewing an album with one prior review.
1 point for reviewing an album with two prior reviews.
0 points for reviewing anything with three or more prior reviews or for reviewing New Releases (2017-2018).

There is the caveat that I will be using my discretion about whether a review deserves to get points even if it falls into the above: the minimum length is two paragraphs and they must otherwise be in line with the site guidelines for reviews.

While there is no prize for being the most prolific reviewer, there will be a shout-out on social media for the best work as well as the most prolific reviewer at the end of the event, based on score.

You can also use this thread to give me a nudge if I've missed your review for some reason. I will be commenting on each that earns points with how many, so keep an eye on the New Site Interactions list.

I really hope that you've just had these reviews written in a month backlog or something, because otherwise how do you write so many reviews in such a short period of time? I wish I could crank out that many reviews while retaining quality.

The two compilation reviews I started months ago and didn't finish. The rest I've written this week. I wrote the Extra Hot Sauce and Megadeth ones in one go yesterday, but the rest have taken a couple of sessions. It's just about getting down what you think and then tidying it up later.

And having worked as a reporter in a daily paper, I've got reasonable discipline when it comes to sitting down and writing. Used to average about 3000 words a day doing that, but it's very different (i.e. easier) writing from notes and interviews than writing something off the top of your head.

My final review for the night:
http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/review/the-art-of-war/300433" rel="nofollow - http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/review/the-art-of-war/300433

These were all written back to back in one session, btw. I usually don't do that, but I was so inspired to write about Sabaton, it kinda just happened. I'm busy tomorrow, so my Coat of Arms review will likely have to wait until Monday or Tuesday. We'll see.

I usually start a review and sometimes slowly work on it, or just keep it sitting on my computer still waiting to be finished. Speaking of, my first review for the challenge is actually one that I started last year and finally finished tonight:

A long review for 1 point. And just so everyone knows, I asked Khaliq before I wrote this review. He mentioned it in the lead-up to the competition, and I didn't want to rain on his parade by getting in and reviewing it before him, but he told me it was OK.

I haven't been feeling too great lately, but I finally got one done today: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/review/coat-of-arms/300434

I'm about to work on Carolus Rex, then Heroes will come tomorrow night or early next week, depending on how I'm feeling tomorrow, because I absolutely don't want to review that one with a cold or fever and risk not doing it justice.

Cool! Later in the month, I'll probably slow down a bit, but I'll focus on albums with no reviews, so that will help. I know I took a 3 point loss so far, but it was worth it because I initially planned on only reviewing The Art of War, but I once started listening to all their albums again, I ended up doing all of them (except The Last Stand, because I gave that one a fully fleshed out review already.)

I really couldn't believe this wasn't reviewed! I love this album. For no good reason whatsoever, EM has it as a compilation. Dickheads.

Here's a wee method I use. Get your basic idea down, then write the review the next day, or a bit later.

It's what I have been doing. I got the basic idea for the Slayer one down while I was finishing Stars on Thrash. I got the basic idea down for Leaders Not Followers 2 while I was doing Seasons in the Abyss. I actually had 3 days to think about it, and also made a start on Unhindered By Talent, which I'd been thinking about previously. So yesterday, I made a start on the idea for the Xentrix review while I was working on the Sore Throat one. Today while doing Xentrix, I have made a start for a GBH review (which I'm not gonna get done today...), and also got down the basic idea for a Squash Bowels review.

At the same time, I've been thinking about what else I can review. I've been thinking about Rebel Meets Rebel (has one review already, but I disagree with UMUR's opinion!), there's a second GBH I've thought of, I've been thinking about doing something for glam so have been examining that (possibly Twisted Sister or Bon Jovi), there's the two Metal For Muthas compilations, "Incesticide" by Nirvana remains unreviewed, and I've been thinking I should check out some German thrash. So yes, there's lots of good albums out there to review, but don't let it paralyse you into inaction because you can't decide what to do next.Smile

Thinking a review ahead gives me a chance to decide what I want to say so that I'm not thinking up everything while staring at the keyboard. That way lies writer's block!Wink

And to my eye, your quality of reviews has been great.Thumbs Up

I didn´t notice this thread before Nicole wrote in the comment section to my reviews. Nice idea, although I won´t spam the FrontPage with reviews. I hate the idea of pushing other peoples reviews away from the FrontPage before they´ve been there at least 24 hours, so visiters have a chance to read them. At least I try to live by that rule Smile
