I thought it would be interesting to hear where you buy your Vinyl, Cd's downloads etc. I always try and support independent retailers like Heavy Ritual records who are good for vinyl as much as possible but ultimately it comes down to price, the cheaper i get them the more albums I can afford. I always buy Cd or Vinyl and have never paid for downloads.

In the past I guess i got most from Amazon but these days their prices seem to be increasing and with their minimum spend policy of £20 for free postage that puts the price up even more and it's usually the Amazon partner sellers who sell them cheaper now. In fact some Amazon partners like Dodax have their own websites so buying from them directly normally means further savings as they don't have to give Amazon a cut.

Don't know what's happened to Play.com these days, they used to beat Amazon on price but these days they either don't have what I want or are too expensive. Likewise I rarely find the cheapest price on ebay and sometimes ridiculous postage costs make the price way too high.

Of course you can't beat walking into a good old fashioned record shop and browsing but the only only one we have near where I live is HMV and their selection is rubbish if you want something that's not mainstream.

Amazon sellers or ebay normally. Didn't actually know that Dodax have their own site. I've bought from them before. Will check their site out. I've bought a lot from All Your Music and zoverstocks as well. zover are a bit hit and miss on whether what they send is anywhere near the condition they listed since they seem to list everything as very good and only evaluate items after they've been sold (they've actually cancelled on me after paying twice now saying the item wasn't good enough to send after all, which pisses me off). In their defense when they do get something rare in they don't seem to whack the price up to ridiculous amounts the way other sellers do. I got quite a few hard to find Running Wild albums from them a few months back, for £8.25 each.

Play.com merged with another company called Rakuten and became shit. Haven't bought from them in ages. Probably never will again. Sad.

I also found the site CD and LP recently (http://www.cdandlp.com/en/). They're a marketplace for independent sellers. I've seen some rarer stuff listed on there that other sites just don't have or want to charge the earth for.

The actual record shop is a dying breed. Aside from HMV's in the nearby Chelmsford and Colchester town centre's (both of which aren't great but have actually been better in the last couple of years than they had been both in terms of selection and prices), we have a small shop in Sudbury which is only a short drive from the town I live in. They don't have much in the metal line though, just a few big names and maybe some newer releases if you're lucky.

I did find a nice shop in Clacton last year which had a decent metal section. I picked up a couple of albums there.

^ Oh yes, all your Music are reliable and great on price though it usually takes around 3 weeks to come from the USA. Dodax are good on price but a bit slow on delivery. I suspect but can't confirm that this is because on Amazon the say they ship from the UK so ship in bulk to their Uk depot from Europe and post separately from there which would explain the average 14 to 20 days delivery. Only problem I sometimes have on their own website is they don't always make it clear what version you're buying with Cd's but can sometimes figure it out from bonus tracks etc.

I don't mind waiting when the price is good enough to justify it.

I've had a few bad experiences with Amazon/ebay sellers too. I ordered an album from a 'Rock&PopCDVD' on Amazon on November 23rd, an Xmas present for my Dad. It didn't arrived until December 24th. The estimated delivery was December 2nd. For some reason they shipped the album from the US to Germany first (and also didn't ship it until December 1st), where it was relabeled and eventually reached us. By that time I had got it refunded (by Amazon, as I couldn't get a satisfactory response from the seller) and bought the album again from that little shop I mentioned in my last post.

Had to repay for it just after Xmas due to it now being marked as delivered on the tracking (which stopped being updated on December 9th until December 23rd). Fortunately my Dad was able to swap the second copy I'd bought for something else.

tl'dr, avoid Rock&PopCDVD.

Just signed up to Dodax's own site and made a few purchases. The best deal was the upcoming Hexx boxset of their first two albums plus a bunch of bonus material for £14.99. I've been watching this set on ebay for a while direct from Metal Blade but they wanted £7 postage on it due to being based in Germany.

I usually buy my music from local music stores or from a site called Alibris. The local music stores around here actually have really good selections, and I even have a store dedicated to hard rock and metal nearby. If the local stores either don't have it or is to expensive, that's when I go to Alibirs. While the shipping prices could be better, the CD prices themselves are really good. I've found some pretty obscure stuff on there for cheap, such as Meliah Rage's "Kill to Survive".

On rare occasion I'll order from Discogs if all else fails, as they will often have the cheapest prices for obscure stuff or albums that for whatever reason aren't cheap.

The Bay Area is blessed with many used music stores. I hit them all to my bank account's chagrin.
Unfortunately even the best used music stores in the world don't always have what you want when you want em so i have spent a lot of money on ImportCDs.com as well as Discogs, Music Stack and last resort Amazon or Ebay. Often some things are only available on small sites or from the artists themselves.

Seems as good a place as any to put this...

If you're online buying do not use the Wow HD website. They are useless and IMO fraudulent.

I have three CDs on order with them which were paid for by PayPal (in other words they were paid instantly). Wow HD have sent nothing off and take over a week to reply to a message, at which point they said they weren't getting the items in after all (yet still list them for sale) and had left my paid for order pending anyway. They said they'd cancel the order but did not refund the money - their exact words were not to worry, as because the order was not dispatched my credit card would not have been charged. As I paid by PayPal I obviously was charged already, a little fact that Wow HD doesn't seem to care about.

I now have to wait to the 26th to get my money back from PayPal due to their ridiculously long window for sellers to defend themselves against a buyer's claim.

Do not use them!

^ I've come across similar problems with other sellers. An order from Speedyhen on ebay didn't show up and they said it would be 5 weeks before they get it back in stock yet they were still advertising as 2 in stock. I did get a refund but don't believe it was ever sent in the first place.

I actually ended up writing a review on Wow HD for trustpilot I was that pissed off with them. The other reviews there are all negative too. The one that just went on today after mine is an even worse case though, they showed someone prices in Danish krone and then charged them in US dollars. That's the number of krone, not the exchange rate. They ended up with a bill about seven times as much as it should have been and like with me, won't give the money back.

Yeah, I do rather like that idea. We did actually start something like that on my old forum Heavy Metal Haven at one point.

It'd be an on-going project of course and would be heavily reliant on people actually sharing their experiences, good and bad. I do think it would be a nice thing to have though as I've often not ordered something just because I didn't know the reputation of the site in question. Trustpilot only goes so far...I mean sites I've never had a problem with sometimes only have a yellow (average) reputation such as Amazon and Dodax either due to lack of reviews or just being rated down based on customer ignorance (one Amazon review I just saw gave them 1 star complaining about now being allowed to leave negative feedback, which isn't true, but their copy/paste job shows that they tried to leave negative feedback on the item review page which is a totally different system). I've taken the plunge on a couple of unknown's recently and not been let down whereas a company I thought would be fine have shafted me.

So yeah, I think such a list could be helpful so long as multiple members contribute to it.

Just thought I'd post a note here that I no longer have any faith in Dodax.co.uk.

Too much stuff bought from them in the last few months has never reached my door, including my recent order of Matthias Steele's Haunting Tales of a Warrior's Past CD, which I order from them three weeks ago and has still not arrived, and they apparently sent a second copy out ten days ago as well. Neither copy has made it here. I also order the Aquilus album from them and the first copy of that didn't get here either. The second (at least I presume it was the second) did, but still I don't think I'm ordering with them anymore with a delivery success rate of just 25%. My previous order of Scanner's Hypertrace also had to be replaced because it didn't arrive.

This may be a problem more with the delivery service, but other sites stuff doesn't disappear en route as often as this.

Since many many shops have gone out of business, I buy CDs and other physical media on Amazon and Rakuten/Play as well as CDON. Digital media I primarily buy on iTunes. I also receive many digital releases as promos. The ones I download will of course be reviewed here. I don't illegally download music, as I think it's anti-social and unfair to the musicisns who try to make a living from their art.

Anyway, I've discovered three record stores on the same street not too from where I live, so that's where I'll go for CDs from now on.

I would love to have a local record shop that I could support but the nearest one has a pretty bad selection of metal - just the biggest bands and some newer releases (like one copy only). When they do have something I want their price tends to be half again the price of online or even HMV, which is really the UK's only major retailer of entertainment now. They are not too bad these days but I have a bit of a drive to get to one from where I live.

when I lived in Manxhester, UK, I would go to HMV rgularly to buy music and films. Sadly, that particular HMV closed a couple of years ago. Fopp is still there, so I buy some stuff there whenever I visit the city. En route from Bangor last week, I spent a night in Manchester.

There is a Fopp in Cambridge which isn't that far from me. It's always been a good shop and I've always found an album or two I was after in there whenever I visit Cambridge.

The sad thing is when I was first discovering music there were shops everywhere. Colchester, which is about a 20 minute drive from me, had HMV, Virgin Megastone (which became Zavvi for a short time), and MVC, all of which were major shops. There were smaller shops as well including one called It's Electric, which I really wish was still there as I wasn't into my music enough to appreciate it at the time as they used to have all kinds of stuff you never saw elsewhere, including I think, demo's from bands that major chains wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

All gone now except HMV.

Not good, can't say I blame you. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first copy just turning up late because they are very slow on delivery - 3 weeks is quite normal. To their credit I've ordered 23 albums from them this year and all have turned up. I do get sick of their slow turn around time though.

On the opposite end of the scale I ordered an album from Heavy Ritual Records Monday morning last week and it arrived the next day!

^ Looks like a nice sire for vinyl.

I need to find a new place to shop for CD's. Amazon are okay, especially for the 3rd party sellers, but their own prices seem to be steadily rising and their free delivery threshold is up to £20 minimum spend now.

I don't know how it is for everyone else in the UK, but it always seems to be the case that whenever I have several packages in the post at any one time at least one of them never gets here.

In 2016 alone, I have had five packages now that haven't turned up.

Currently also waiting on a delivery for a label called Glorious North Productions, who I've purchased a job lot of albums from. That isn't late, yet, though it is supposed to be here by tomorrow.

The only decent record store left is an independent called Penny Lane Records, and it's damn good, if a little quirky. A lot of the stuff they deal in is second hand, so you can get some real bargains, but then they bring in imports too, at ridiculous prices. The metal section is the biggest specialist section they have, and it's mostly full of the big names, or completely obscure, unknown stuff (i.e. crap!), but you can get the odd gem there.

JB Hifi is more an electronics retailer with a CD section, and is finally coming to Christchurch next month. Will have to check it out.

The only other place is The Warehouse, which is NZ's version of Walmart, without being evil (I used to work for themWink). It's definitely mainstream, although they do still get the odd shipment of remaindered stock, which means you can pick up some odd things really cheap. I got several Dark Tranquillitys, some Anathemas, an Iced Earth or two, Exodus' Bonded By Blood, a Toy Dolls album, and all sorts of knock offs there real cheap. It's also the place to go to buy Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth etc. because it's cheap.

I have two main musical passions: classical music and metal. The former, I only use CDS, bought mostly in Amazon nowadays. The latter, I have purchased in physical stores in the past, but since the demise of many of them, for that genre I have moved to digital tracks, almost 100% iTunes. Which is dangerous because more music and less money is only a click away Tongue

I usually use the 3rd party sellers on Amazon too as you're right, their prices are getting silly.

For new releases, I'm fortunate enough to still have a local indie music shop that stocks the good stuff, so I stop in there as often as I can - we gotta keep the little guys in business, especially since the bigger chains have all packed up and left Dodge.

I pass a Goodwill Store on my way to work so I stop in there every week or two for a bit of CD scrounging - I don't find a lot of metal there (tho I have scored some Testament, Flotsam and Jetsam, and Candlemass disc there over the years!) but I do find quite a bit of 70s/80s classic rock stuff (Boston, Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, Yes, etc.).

Otherwise it's a vast wasteland for brick and mortar stores in my area. Best Buy used to have a decent CD selection but it's gone so far downhill over the past couple of years that I don't even bother with them anymore.

Online, GoHastings used to be my go-to site but they went out of business last year. I have yet to find a new site that's comparable.

The last metal distro I ordered from was Hells' Headbangers.

^ Did you actually pay for one day delivery? Because if you did you should demand a refund.

Amazon don't guarantee it for release date if you don't select One Day Delivery and you also have to be careful that it actually says One Day and not 'Expedited' because that means you absolutely won't get something on release date/next day (regardless of pre-order).

I used to get things on release date or just after without having to pay years ago, but they don't pre-dispatch any more unless you're on Prime or pay for One Day Delivery.

I've got Prime right now, which I got more for Amazon Video than the free one day delivery deal, but I have made use of that on a few things. I got caught out once by not seeing the difference between One Day Delivery and Expedited delivery, on something I needed quickly too, though.

I've posted my issues with ordering the Panopticon Kentucky reissue with them somewhere on this forum already which has been their biggest screw-up with anything I bought since taking Prime for a year. They didn't promise One Day Delivery on that but they did promise that I'd have it by June 5th. Their date, June 2nd was actually an incorrect release date so I wasn't too bothered when, as expected, June 4th rolled around and it wasn't dispatched, but they they didn't ship it on or around the real release date either. I cancelled after contacting them and they outright told me they couldn't get it.

It's now in stock and has been for at least a week or more, though they've since greatly inflated their price into what I deem the unacceptable area for a new, single disc CD album.

I've re-ordered it elsewhere (paying less than Amazon originally charged but more than Amazon sellers are now listing it for) but I still don't have it. I'll have been waiting two weeks tomorrow.

I think the Panopticon album did get it's release date put back to the end of June so that's probably why they couldn't get it.

It's often worth hanging on with Amazon until the release date before ordering as the other sellers often beat them on price, even paying for delivery by quite a bit. With vinyl I only tend to pre-order at Amazon if it's no more than £15 as I wouldn't expect it to be going much cheaper than that anyway.

The Decapitated album turned up today which is only a day after release date and much better than their original estimate of Tuesday so I'm happy. Smile

It was released on June 16th worldwide according to the record label. I contacted Amazon after that and they told me that no, they couldn't get it to me within the window they were advertising (which would have been July 1st at the latest), which was supported by the listing page which had changed to 'usually shipped within 1 - 2 months.'

I'm growing very tired with Amazon. Fair enough, if you don't pay for delivery or are a prime customer you can't expect to receive your order in a couple of days but to sit on it for five days without even posting it is not on. It's only encouraging me to go elsewhere.

My priorities when ordering music are...

1. Price - Amazon rarely the cheapest these days.
2. Packaging - Amazon usually good on that.
3. Delivery speed - Amazon getting slower and slower.

So Amazon need to get a grip if they want to me to keep buying music from them.

I hardly buy anything any more. I spend most of my time just listening to music off YouTube now.

Yeah the average new metal album price has really crept towards the £15 mark fast in the last couple of years and that's just for CDs. I often find it's cheaper to pay for the postage on a seller's price.

I usually can't complain either, though I have had a case of overkill packaging. Better than not enough though.

Originally posted by Nightfly Nightfly wrote:

Being on Prime I've mostly been OK, but there have been a few items that they couldn't deliver on Prime speed for me.

I think this is because more and more people are going onto Prime though: they are contractually obligated to provide those orders fast, so anyone who is still holding out on Prime is getting later and later stuff. I wish I could say I believe that is all it is though: I'm willing to bet that a part of it is their way of trying to push you to Prime by delaying your order. The trouble here is most sellers seem to be in the US or Europe now which means you'll still probably get something direct from Amazon first.

I'm a Prime customer mostly for the Prime Video feature because it's not that much more to buy the full yearly Prime subscription that includes the free and fast delivery than it is to just have the videos for a monthly fee.

The only trouble with Prime video is that it's not, yet, a patch on Netflix, especially in terms of adding new content. I follow a few of their original/exclusive shows such as Vikings, The Grand Tour and Lucifer and I've watched a few films. They've recently added Arrival which is still a fairly recent film that I intend to check out soon.

I would add a 4th point about Amazon:

4. Their selection of titles

I find that Amazon often doesn't actually keep the titles I want to buy, or if they do list them they have a release date set after the official release date for the UK (which also stops sellers from listing that title) and often don't get any stock for titles they offer up for pre-order until well after the event. This is what happened to me with the Panopticon Kentucky reissue. Before than it was the last Mare Cognitum album, which I pre-ordered the day they made it available (had been checking every day).

I'm currently wanting to get a pre-order in for the new Anubis Gate, which is out in under two weeks, yet still isn't available to pre-order from Amazon.

^ I've always held out from getting Prime and delaying my order won't encourage me to join, it'll just make me buy elsewhere.

I have Netflix and don't feel the need to have Prime as well and what you've said only confirms my thoughts about it.

Netflix is definitely better than Prime for video. When the time comes to renew whether we do or not really depends on how much everyone else in the house is watching on Prime, because I haven't touched their video section since I finished catching up with Vikings.

Just found out that the officially endorsed European pre-order site for the new Anubis Gate is WowHD who previously tried to rip me off. Extremely unusual and bad call on Nightmare Records' part.

Well what do you know, after some recent disappointing delivery times from Amazon my copy of the new Myrkur album is arriving tomorrow on release date and I didn't pay shipping. Might be so they can send it with the new Argus album I ordered last weekend in one package and they figure they've hung onto that long enough. Whatever, I'm pleased it's arriving so soon but there doesn't seem to be any consistency with them these days.

^ I agree, Dodax are usually good on price and I've never had an order go missing or had to return one that was damaged. You're right though, very slow - I normally expect 18 - 25 days and only once has one arrived in a week. I suspect it's because they're German based but on Amazon they say shipped from the UK. I think they may ship over here in bulk and then post individual items once they arrive in the UK from a smaller warehouse. Either that or they don't have much in stock and have to order from a supplier after you place the order.

They have their own website as well as on Amazon which is usually a bit cheaper still. I order most of mine through this but it doesn't seem to make a difference to delivery time.

Amazon just dropped a lot in my regards.

I purchased a CD yesterday, direct from them (not a fulfilled by Amazon listing), in New condition.

It arrived just now and is very clearly a used CD. No shrink wrap and the case is quite heavily scuffed, which is usually a sign of handling over a long period of time in my experience. I'm testing the disc now, and so long as its fine I'll keep for the low price it cost, but needless to say I'm pretty disgusted by this. I've had this kind of crap from 3rd parties before (more often with books) but never Amazon themselves.

I pre-ordered the limited edition CD version of the new Morbid Angel from Dodax in November (released 1st Dec) and they haven't even posted it yet. Presumably they're having trouble getting it but it's surprising for a new release. Don't suppose I'll get it this side of Christmas now.

I'd chase that up with them. They should at least give you an update on what's happening with the order.

Dodax came through on everything I ordered from them recently, though they did display a habit of not fulfilling orders in order, so I got stuff ordered over the course of two three days over the space of nine days, with the first CD I ordered coming in last. I presume this may be something to do with having (I presume) multiple warehouses.

Amazon have fucked up again. Ordered the Power Trip album on vinyl 31st Dec and when it finally arrived today after a long wait it was the wrong album - they sent me something by someone called Mulato Astatke! No doubt I'll end up waiting another 3 or 4 weeks now.

You certainly seem to have bad luck when it comes to Amazon, Paul.

In all my years shopping online I've had a few things lost in the post (usually from 3rd party sellers), a couple of instances where the seller turned out to be a conning bastard, but only one time did I actually receive an outright incorrect delivery. That was years back from HMV, before they nearly went bust even. Can't remember what I was meant to receive now except that it was my Dad's birthday present. They sent me some compilation of Dance music instead.

Don't know what's going on with Dodax lately, I suspect they may be the verge of going bust. I've had 2 order issues with them lately, one through Amazon where I had to go to Amazon to get my money back and another through their own website which I ordered on 2nd June and still hasn't arrived (marked as in progress). In both cases they ignored my messages to them. They've had a load of 1* reviews on Amazon too.

They take forever to deliver but have always been good on price but I'm not ordering anything else until I see some proof that they're fullfilling orders.

^ A shame, I had several bargains from them around Xmas time. There's several reviews on Trustpilot that confirm they have gone into administration. This happened to another website (I presume) that I used to use (or it may have been an Amazon seller, don't recall) and it looks like the same deal: they keep taking your orders and money, with no intention of fulfilling them.

If you paid through PayPal on their website you can open a dispute there to get your money back.

^ Dodax seem to have recovered from their problems earlier this year, at least to an extent. After seemingly going into administration earlier this year and the last couple of orders i placed around June time taking forever I gave up on them. I didn't really expect them to be trading anymore but gave them a go again with a cheap-ish CD (Marduk) to test them out and it came in about 10 days. Just had an LP arrive in a similar time which is quicker than they ever were in my experience.

Hopefully they're back as their prices are much better than Amazon usually.

Anyone else noticed how expensive Amazon are on music these days, vinyl and CD? there was a time when they really undercut everyone else but now it's as if they don't care about selling music anymore as some of their prices are ridiculous. I think there's an opening for a new online company who's prepared to make a modest profit on each item to come in and make a killing.

It's been a while since I bought any new music. But I've been noticing base Amazon prices creeping up for a long time. It's always been cheaper to buy from their third party sellers and accept the longer delivery time or better yet go to that seller's own site where it is probably a little cheaper.

I don't know how Dodax is these days and I no longer trust MusicMagpie, but I have to say that World of Books have proved pretty reliable for movies I've bought. A few randomly selected band checks with them though doesn't show up much of a stock for metal CDs. I'd probably search ebay first of all these days if looking for a particular release. Or Discogs.

Dodax are very reliable these days after their little set back a while back. Their prices aren't as cheap as they used to be, in fact sometimes they're more expensive than Amazon but generally they're still cheaper. They are sometimes a bit behind on more obscure new releases.

I've never had any problems with MusicMagpie myself, always found them reliable and accurate with their description of 2nd hand stuff.

Ebay, I still usually find more expensive than Amazon. It's only occasionally I buy music there. Some sellers seem to ask ridiculous prices.

My issue with MusicMagpie is mainly due to their appealing customer service. Though I do find that they 'always' describe their items as being in 'very good' condition and often are far from it. I suspect they evaluate items only after they've sold them.

I must have been lucky with MusicMagpie although I did buy a Cannibal Corpse 2nd hand CD they described as very good. The CD was excellent but the digipak cover was a bit worse for wear, probably good at best.

I'm just thinking of the many times they say they have very good condition items only to when it comes to dispatch time suddenly say the item isn't good enough to send after all.

Their quality control process must be virtually non-existent though given the amount of times I have received discs from them that are so scratched to hell you'd think the previous owner had been a cat.

While some discs will still play like that, I never accept them, not from companies or personal sellers on ebay (unless disclosed, but then I only buy if described as minor scratches with an assurance of being in working order) And I've had several discs from them, both CD and DVD, that did not play properly.

I know they get most of their stock from people selling it to them and some people must knowingly sell them discs that do not work, but the final straw for me was their CS department. I just got the impression that their representatives couldn't be arsed to actually deal with a situation I had with them and just keep feeding me canned responses. And their final solutions to issues left something to be desired. Their go-to response is to completely cancel your order and blame it on a glitch in their system. No effort at all to actually fulfil it.

I think the bigger the company is the less they care.

I must admit I have sometimes given a company another chance out of necessity to get a certain item, but I'm still reeling at MusicMagpie and their dumb excuses. I swore in February that they'd lost me as a customer for life and true to my word I haven't purchased a thing from them ever since.

I wouldn't even look at them. Avoids any possible temptation that way. I don't know if you read my linked review of the company on my earlier post but it basically amounted to having to get my money back through PayPal when they showed no sign of ever intending to fulfil my order and had in fact cancelled it but decided they'd keep my £30+ I'd paid them. I've not actually used them for music (at least lately) but World of Books is starting to prove untrustworthy and have an even worse CS department than Music Magpie. I don't think I shall be buying from them again. Another company struck off the list of reputable retailers for me.

I won't go into full details right now (but you can bet a scathing Trust Pilot review will be inbound). The short of it is I bought a collector's edition blu-ray from them, received it incomplete (no idea what they're selling, obviously) and sent it back (at cost to me, which legally they have to reimburse). That was almost three weeks ago and they still have not seen fit to give my money back. I have a PayPal dispute open with them which they have a few more days to reply to, but so far don't seem inclined. My only conclusion is that they intend to keep (read: steal) my money.

Anyone know how reliable Dodax is these days? Seem like they have some of the best deals at the moment.

I’ve never had a non-delivery or any problems except for them being painfully slow. But then I no longer buy vinyl so can’t judge on those.

Yeah they always were slower than other Euro based companies when I used them in the past.

Can't see shipping in from Europe getting any better with a No Deal Brexit on the horizon.
