This might not be a popular opinion around here, but for the most part, I don't really get into live metal albums (there are some exceptions). I prefer having the full visual and audio experience, as I feel something is lost with just the audio. More often than not, I prefer listening to live albums from prog rock or jazz artisits due to their more willingness to "shake things up" in their playing (once again, there are exceptions). That being said, I think a live metal album usually would make for a great substitute over a best of/compilation. For example, I'd get more enjoyment out of hearing Iron Maiden's "Rock In Rio" over one of their numerous best-of albums. ------------- https://armchairmaestro.com/" rel="nofollow - My Music Blog |

^ I agree. I just don't find that much more enjoyment in listening to live albums than studio version ones. If I had a choice to buy a life or studio I'd probably go wit the studio.

I generally do not do live albums. Live DVD's are another matter entirely.  The one live album that I really like is Epic'a The Classical Conspiracy, mainly because much of it is covers of classical music mixed with metal, and they don't have this material on any studio release. I have a few others in my collection, but they don't get played as much as that one, not even Live After Death. So I can only do a list of 2 really. 1. Epica - The Classical Conspiracy 2. don't know that many Iron Maiden - Life after death (obvious example, I listened to this one a lot back in highschool )Slayer - Decade of Aggression (first thing I heard from them , again back in highschool, it worked kinda like a greatest hits compilation) Dream Theater - Score (their best live album IMO) Threshold - Critical Energy non-metal I've got a few Marillion DVDs, all worth watching for anyone enjoying Marillion (2 of them with Fish, 2 with Hogarth). |
