This might not be a popular opinion around here, but for the most part, I don't really get into live metal albums (there are some exceptions).  I prefer having the full visual and audio experience, as I feel something is lost with just the audio.  More often than not, I prefer listening to live albums from prog rock or jazz artisits due to their more willingness to "shake things up" in their playing (once again, there are exceptions).

That being said, I think a live metal album usually would make for a great substitute over a best of/compilation.  For example, I'd get more enjoyment out of hearing Iron Maiden's "Rock In Rio" over one of their numerous best-of albums.

^ I agree. I just don't find that much more enjoyment in listening to live albums than studio version ones. If I had a choice to buy a life or studio I'd probably go wit the studio.

I generally do not do live albums. Live DVD's are another matter entirely. Wink

The one live album that I really like is Epic'a The Classical Conspiracy, mainly because much of it is covers of classical music mixed with metal, and they don't have this material on any studio release.

I have a few others in my collection, but they don't get played as much as that one, not even Live After Death.

So I can only do a list of 2 really.

1. Epica - The Classical Conspiracy
2. Iron Maiden - Live After Death

2. Made in Japan - Deep Purple
3. Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy
4. Unleashed in the East - Judas Priest
5. Live at the BBC - Diamond Head (The first show is excellent, the second...not so much)
6. Maiden Japan - Iron Maiden
7. Live! Go for What You Know - Pat Travers
8. Live in Munich 1977 - Rainbow
9. The Eagle Has Landed - Saxon
10. One Night at Budokan - The Michael Schenker Group

don't know that many

Iron Maiden - Life after death (obvious example, I listened to this one a lot back in highschool LOL)
Slayer - Decade of Aggression (first thing I heard from them , again back in highschool, it worked kinda like a greatest hits compilation)
Dream Theater - Score (their best live album IMO)
Threshold - Critical Energy

non-metal
I've got a few Marillion DVDs, all worth watching for anyone enjoying Marillion (2 of them with Fish, 2 with Hogarth).

That one's live in the studio.

I love live albums, so I can't stop at 10... I've only mentioned one per band too. I have a heap more, but if I haven't mentioned them, I don't rate 'em (Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Nailbomb, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Obituary, Nirvana, Kiss, Judas Priest (although I don't have Unleashed In The East), Guns n Roses, In Flames, Arch Enemy...)

No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith - Motorhead (Where's the love for this classic???)
Live Shit: Binge & Purge - Metallica
Live After Death - Iron Maiden
Live Scars - Dark Angel (only a mini album)
Live At Budokan - SOD
Dying Alive - Kreator
In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up (Live) - Ministry
Goodbye Cruel World - Brutal Truth (one disc is live, the other b-sides, outtakes and a few live songs)
No Sleep Til Bedtime: Live In Australia - Strapping Young Lad
When Satan Lives - Deicide (was so much better than I ever expected)
Live Cannibalism - Cannibal Corpse
The Curse Of The Antichrist – Live In Agony - Destruction
Live At The Powerstation - Devilskin (gotta chuck in a Kiwi one!)
Entangled in Chaos - Morbid Angel
Emperial Live Ceremony - Emperor
Live In The UK - Helloween
Official Live: 101 Proof - Pantera
Live At Hammersmith 1984 - Twisted Sister
Live In Vienna ‘93 - Unleashed
