Topic: Heavy Psych and Doom Metal Bands

Subject: Heavy Psych and Doom Metal Bands

A while ago I started looking for bands that play heavy psych (psychedelic hard rock) and doom metal bands that use psych elements. I posted this same thread on my website Heavy Metal Haven a while ago, however it was not that long before the site had to close and I didn't get as many responses as I would have liked. So I decided to resurrect the topic here on MMA. Any bands that play a combo of heavy psych/doom metal are the sort of thing I'm looking for though I am interested in bands that don't use the doom elements (like Purson) or only have less frequent uses of psych (like Avatarium). Female vocals are a plus for me but not essential.

Here's the bands I already know and have enjoyed so you can get a better idea about what I'm looking for.

Purson:

Blood Ceremony:

Mount Salem:

Jex Thoth:

Avatarium:

Jess and the Ancient Ones:

I was recommended them on Haven actually. They look intriguing though the blues tag on RYM is a bit off putting for me since I don't usually get on with blues. I expect I will try them though, I may be pleasantly surprised.

I tried the first couple of tracks off their album. Interesting stuff but not quite what I'm looking for. Thanks though. I think my Dad may enjoy them more than me.

If you're looking for early heavy psych, I'd recommend early Deep Purple and early Eloy.

here's my short list

Witchcraft
Weedpecker (a great band from Poland, their debut album is great, they are to release their seconsd album soon)
Mountain Witch
Mount Salem
Black Oath (Italian band, quite good)
Black Willows (their album Haze from 2013 is great)
Year of the Goat (really great band, very pleasantly surprised)
Blood Ceremony
Avatarium
Bask (is it stoner, is it doom, is it hard rock, is it sludge, I dunno, maybe all of them - LOL)
ASG (I only know the album Blood Drive from 2013, but it fits here quite nicely)
Redcoats (I have listened to their selftitled album from 2012, I warmly recommend it)

I'll be back if I forgot something Big smile

Thought Avatarium sounded great - in fact I've ordered the album. Probably get the Purson album too.

I think Lucifer might just be what you're looking for - great female vocals from Johanna Sadonis too...

- As far as female singers go: I think you already know Subrosa...

How about Grayceon? (might be more prog than you are looking for)

Battles of Mice are kind of weird/creepy but might be worth a shot

Worm Ouroboros is cool

Marriages

Some of Boris' albums have mostly female vocals (not English speaking)

- Male fronted bands:

Dead Meadow

Earth (check out the album Pentastar, earlier material is heavier, later material is lighter.  Vocals are scarce)

Sleep's album Holy Mountain is pretty psychedelic for doom metal

Om

of course some of the classics like Hawkwind and Captain Beyond might fit the bill

- Instrumental:

Earthless

that's all I've got off the top of my head, hope something fits the bill

Tried this one. Didn't immediately grab me but held my attention enough to keep them in mind for another listen.

Two masterpieces IMO.

Yeah, did listen to No Help for the Mighty Ones back in 2011, though I don't remember much about it now. Will look into all those others you posted too.

Witch Charmer? Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but it's certainly some really awesome stoner/doom metal.

The Devil's Blood no longer exist since the suicide of leader/guitarist Selim Lemouchi but they were a hell of a good band. Surprised they're not on the site (I've put them forward to hard rock team).

One of my faves is Electric Wizard, but I´m not sure they´ll be to your tastes Adam. I´ll still recommend checking them out. Dopethrone is their most praised album, but knowing your tastes you should maybe try one of their later releases, if you´d like to give them a listen.

I agree. I didn't like the less heavy direction of their last album so much but I did still enjoy it a fair bit and was looking forward to hearing more from them.

I'm sure Rosalie Cunningham will surface somewhere and as she played practically everything on the album bar drums with the rest of the guys there for live work and a band image then it may not be such a great loss.
