two bands who have (had) vissions to what they would sound like, bands who in many degrees are unique, two bands who have brought new focus to progmetal and to metal as a hole, they raised new barriers to technical metal to be reached in the combined elements such as deliverence, album format, form, attitude,
one is more energic, angry, ferocius and jazzy while the other is more avant-garde, symphnonic, mystic.
both bands are able to createb beautifull soundscapes. two bands from two different scenes, one from Georgia which styl leads more to southern rock, metal and metalcore, but have taken it to totaly new areas the true Progressive Sludge metal band. Arcturus are a Black-Metal supergroup with the attitude of Black metal, the scandinavian sound (folk, melancoly, winteresque, depictering the norse landscapes), but ads a symphonic, dark and progressive edge to it the true Progressive Norwegian black metal band .
I love/like them both

Arcturus is one of the familiar names that I've never actually heard. But Mastodon I love. No vote.

I do enjoy Mastodon, but my vote goes for Arcturus. The latest two albums are magnificent.

I�m really not fond of the synth heavy black/ progressive metal style of Arcturus. But then again I might change my mind when I listen to the albums again before writing reviews ( it�s been a while since the last listen). Who knows? Stranger things have happened.
I�m not a giant fan of Mastodon, but they produce quality metal. I will have to go for Mastodon on this one.

GOT to be Arcturus. Absolutely no contest. I like Mastodon though, especially Leviathan. I saw them a couple of times and they crushed on both occasions.

I only have the debut from Arcturus (which I do enjoy), but Mastodon has to get my vote. I'm not a huge Mastodon fan or anything, and I only moderately enjoy most of their catalogue, but Crack The Skye is excellent IMO.
