If were talking "Modern" types of metal Id definitely say Metallica.

i think Maiden took all the interesting things about metal and really put them forward. Metallica did experiment a good bit, but it felt forced compare to Maiden. Both are massive influences though

Maiden's winning, hmmmm, interesting. I'm with Jonas on this one. The very structure of Metallica songs was more influential and it was also the first band to combine extreme metal with rock ballads within the same song - a concept further explored by Opeth.

I like Iron Maiden way more than Metallica but I think Metallica definitely had a bigger influence on "Modern" metal.

I hear a lot of Maiden copyist type bands especially with the galloping guitars.

But I wouldnt call bands employing galloping rythms "modern" sounding (however great those galloping rythms areHeadbanger)

I think Dave Mustaine can claim credit for the majority of Metallica's elements that were influencial to modern metal, and for that reason I can't vote Metallica on general principle :P

Iron Maiden continues to have influence on metal acts (and they still even release killer material), so they get my vote. Metallica's first four albums are classics for sure, but they've become a bit of a joke over the past two decades. They're still hugely influential, but I think you'd be very hard pressed to find too many metal acts that weren't influenced by Maiden.

I think it would be Metallica.  That being said, over the past 10 or so years Maiden has definitely had a resurgence among younger fans.  When I saw them in 2003, there were very few people my age or younger.  Now I see teens in Maiden shirts whenever I'm at the mall.

Poll is modern metal which just means 'newer bands' to me - if it was meant to mean 'modern sounding' that would change the meaning of the question for me.

Yes, that was the meaning. I don't mean all those Metallica and Iron Maiden clones that spring up to this day. I meant all modern bands that somehow have become influential themselves... or at least don't imitate any of these two bands. So all modern thrash, post thrash, heavy, stoner, progressive, alternative, post metal etc. etc.

Metallica obviously.

And if there was a second name there regarding modern sounding metal, it should be Pantera.
