I have included some subgenres together as quite close to each other though not the same. I have not included crossover/hybrid kinds eg. black/thrash, death/black, blackened doom, blackened death etc because they are not really subgenres rather some attempted categorizations, and I have also avoided classification by region eg. Scandinavian, Cascadian, French black metal etc. All in all, the question is which subgenre do you like best?

In my opinion avant-garde is related to post/prog line whle a finest exper black metal band is Circle of Ouruborus. Atmospheric black metal is perfectly presented by bands are for ex: Ancient Wisdom, Diabolical Masquerade, Sear Bliss and early Arcturus. People say that atmospheric black is quite the same as symphonic/melodic black metal, but if listening to these bands,  it can be seen that there are significant differences between symp and atmosph. Atmospheric black metal is also present in hybrid form in bands like Negura Bunget, Fen.

Finally, though it's not my primary field of interest, I have been following black metal since abot '95 but only the main lines, so I'm not almighty at it. There are of course tons of bands in the world, and, sometimes it's almost impossible to follow all lines going forward and interweaving into each other.

Going to go with atmospheric since most of my favorites fall under that category.

Here's some song examples, Balthy.

Had black-thrash been included I would have gone with that, but since it isn't I've gone with prog black metal.

You can see atmosph. bands inserts above. Overlap bands (basically atmosph. but having ambient tendencies): Fen, Darkspace, Sombres Foret, Drudkh etc. Ambient black metal bands: Forest Silence, Fauna, Clair Cassis, Velvet Cacoon, Vinterriket etc, and black metal mixed with ambience: Ildjarn, Burzum, Leviathan (US) etc.

I love all of those, but my favourite would have to be Folk/Viking/Pagan Black Metal.
