Ok. I know it's a corny subject-title, but isn't horror movies all about the gore, cheap thrill and being downright corny?

Since metal and horror goes great together, which horror movies is your favorite and why?

I don't watch tons of horror movies, but I like watching the old black and white horror movies from the 30s.  I picked up a box set with around 50 movies in it last Halloween, but I don't know where it went.  I'd only had a chance to watch a couple of them, including :White Zombie" starring Bela Lugosi.

I love the original Night of the Living Dead movie as well.  I've seen the remake of Dawn of The Dead, but I didn't care for it.  I still need to see the original Dawn.

Have you seen Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari? It's a horror movie from the 20s, pretty awesome silent filmTongue

My favourite horror movie is Rosemary's Baby.

The Gothic german silents from the 20's are some of the best horror movies made. I also like T.H. Dreyers Vampyr, that plays like a feverdream.

I'm a obviously a fan of the Coffin Joe series Tongue - Brasilien occult/slasher/gore fest. The original trilogy is worth checking out, and there's some really disturbing and insane scenes in there. Not like Cannibal Holocaust disturbing. But I can imagine why Coffin Joe or Jos Mojica Marins was frowned upon in 1963 when the first film was released. You can read more about the films here:

Dario Argento have also made some great horror films - Suspiria being the best one in my opinion.

I've seen "Vampyr" a long time ago, and it really was nightmarishly awesome - I also recall being quite fond of a short film by Dreyer called "De Naaede Baaden". I have a weakness for the old Universal monster flicks of the 30-60s and I also enjoy really well put together thrillers, and I have a small collection of those types of movies.

I also have a bunch of old German gothic silents, but I've never had to time to watch them.

I was a big fan of slashers back in my teens, but I appear to have outgrown that stuff, as it no longer appeals to me at all - I still do like the build-up phase of slashers and similar types of films with all the suspense and the slow revelation of the horrors to come, but as soon as the carnage starts, I seize to be impressed.

I do welcome very well put together horror flicks, regardless of the genre. And I don't mind if they are a bit arty, too. I also like really campy b-movie horror stuff (ironically, perhaps), and I have a weakness for giant monster Godzilla flicks, too.

The campy slasher of the 70's & 80's do have some merit. Halloween & Halloween II being my favorites.

I'm not really into to whole torture-porn wave, although i found Hostel entertaining.

Of recent films that is worth to mention, there's Descent & Dog Soldiers. Both made with a fairly low budget, but succeeds with great acting and creative ideas.

Oh.. and of course D Sn (dead snow), the norwegian nazi-zombie-splatter-comedy & Trollhunter (also norwegian) - a blairwitch meets trolls in Norway!

Trollhunter sounds interesting. And speaking of zombie-comedy, "Shaun of the Dead" is awesome.

Trollhunter is epic! More on the humorous side though. It's really well made & the trolls looks like real trolls from the mythology.

My brother and I used to collect horror movies and especially splatter movies like the Evil Dead movies and of course Braindead and Bad Taste by Peter jackson. Ive become a wimp after having children though and I simply have a hard time enjoying the really hardcore horror movies anymore ( not that the ones I mentioned are hardcore in any way). Ive seen quite a few of the Japanese ones in the last ten years and boy some of those are creepy like hell. Ive seen a couple of South Corean ones too and those were really unpleasant too.

The most nasty one Ive seen in a while ( not sure if it really qualifies as horror though) is "Ichi the Killer". Its the same director who made "Audition" which I havent seen myself, but Ive been told the last 15 minutes of that movie should give even the most tough guy castration anxiety.

The movies that usually get me are creature films so to me a scary movie is "Black Waters" O.o but I love serial killer movies like:
Halloween (both the original and new ones)
Friday the 13th (I think they should have put Jason in the woodchipper in the new one instead of back into the water :P)
Nightmare on Elm street
Saw ( They are amzing :O)
oh and I love zombie movies too! the only one i've seen that was too dumb for me (and I love stupid movies) was ahhh Zombies! -_-
