One of many death metal bands to emerge from the US, Dublin, California based Rings of Saturn have managed to set themselves apart from the rest with their trademark "aliencore" sound. They have developed quite a reputation and fanbase in a very short amount of time, and with a new album already on the rise, Rings of Saturn can only go up from here. When asked, the minds behind Rings of Saturn kindly obliged to an interview.

Can you share a little bit about how the band met, and how Rings of Saturn came to be?

Lucas (guitarist) was trying to find musicians to begin a legitimate death metal project with.  After jamming with, and trying out about 15 or 20 different musicians, he found Brent (drummer).  They wrote an entire album together in their studio space in Oakland while they continued to search for a talented vocalist.  By luck, Lucas's best friend's girlfriend introduced him to Peter (vocalist).  They ditched the previous album written due to a group decision to write more original material and took on the name Rings of Saturn due to the new spacey sound Lucas began to write.  After a couple months of writing they all hit the studio and recorded Embryonic Anomaly.  The final members Joel (guitarist), Colin (bassist), and Chris (keyboardist) where discovered through networking on Facebook after Rings of Saturn signed to Unique Leader Records.

How would you describe the music of Rings of Saturn, in your own words?

It's really a unique listening experience that is out of this world.  It stays relentlessly brutal and interesting through multiple listens.

How do you write music; what is the process of composition and arrangement?

Lucas writes all the music for all the instruments on guitarpro.  He then sends the rough drum outline to Brent who then uses it to write his own drums.  Peter then writes the lyrics for the material and assists Lucas in Laying it out rhythmically over the songs.

Rings of Saturn's lyrics and subject matter revolve deeply around aliens. What makes aliens such a magnetic topic for Rings of Saturn?

Nothing is more metal then an extraterrestrial, invincible alien race that is bent on massacring humanity to exterminate it's filth from the universe.  This is why the subject is deeply ingrained in our lyrical content.

In terms of the studio album Rings of Saturn has released, 'Embryonic Anomaly,' what are your thoughts and recollections concerning it?

We believe that it definitely turned out better then expected, and were very happy to see that it was received very well by the metal community.

Any personal favorite moments or traits of Embryonic Anomaly that youre particularly proud of?

Figuring out how to create the signature harmonized guitar tone that separates us from other bands was a huge turning point for the band.  Another favorite moment was hearing Peter's vocals in the studio for the first time.

What is your reaction to the way listeners have been treating the album thus far?

Our reaction is very grateful that people are enjoying our music and are getting something different out of it.  We are stoked to continue bringing them interesting and brutal metal.

Any final comments on Embryonic Anomaly?

If you dig us, help support the band by picking up some shirts and our album at our official merch store! http://ringsofsaturnmerchstore.bigcartel.com/

What are your views on the current metal scene?

I personally believe the metal scene could be expanded if less pirating was going on.  Labels need the money to bring new talented bands into the mix, and bands need the money to continue to bring their loyal fans good music.

Any favorite metal groups? What have you been listening to lately?

Hiroshima Will Burn, Thy Art Is Murder, Viraemia, The Boy Will Drown, Anomalous

Rings of Saturn will be releasing a new album this year. In what way will the upcoming album be different than 'Embryonic Anomaly?'

Our 3 new members have a lot of new and impressive ideas that they will be bringing to Rings of Saturn.  This will definitely expand our sound and bring a new listening experience to audience.

A huge thank you goes out to Rings of Saturn for answering these questions in such depth, and for being so fan interactive.
