Ok, calling the Swans metal and you might have Michael Gira come after you with a knife to slit your throat.
But I finally took up the courage!

I'm talking about their first two albums only, which were essential to all things Sludge and Grind.
In fact I do believe they fit the Sludge description of MMA perfectly. No Neurosis or Godflesh without this.

From 1983 folks

And from 1984

Albums 3 and 4 were more Industrial and album 5 "Children of God" more Goth. The latter especially was a huge source of inspiration for Anathema and My Dying Bride but no metal as such.
From album 6 onwards they were a stronghold in the Goth/New Wave scene of the late 80s early 90s.

Anyway. It's album 1 and 2 we're looking at.

So it would only be the first two albums that should be tagged sludge/ post metal and the rest non-metal?

Yes IMO, there's also 2 EPs from that period I believe.

They were noise-rock as far as I know, but maybe they could be considered proto-something?

First of all, I FUCKIN' LOVE SWANS

Secondly, my first impression upon seeing this thread was "uh, no!"
But, having listened to those samples (I don't have anything of theirs older than Love of Life), I could actually see this happening.  It's probably a yes from me, but I'll see what the rest of the team says

Bump

Just letting you know, as of now two members of the sludge team have said that they could see Swans getting added, but aren't 100% sure.  So I think we are waiting on another opinion or two.

Could just be me, but Filth 'n' Cop have, to my ears, a distinct industrial sound... that whirling, scraping buzz persistent throughout. I'd throw Ministry into the mix regarding who they influenced.

Might be catching 'em live next month :)

They do, but Filth (and Cop) also sounds like its name - dirty as hell, which is a trait that IMO mostly belongs to the sludge subgenre

While I'm not in disagreement that their sound has those distinct traits, the title Filth is certainly synonymous with the music, there is the slight problem of Sludge Metal only becoming a widely used term in the mid '80's, which was pointedly used for the Melvins early records. The same goes for Industrial Metal which was around the mid to late eights. I'd agree with harmonium.ro's thoughts that they were 'proto-something' i.e. the aforesaid genre's, but probably best labeled as Noise-Rock or plan ol' Industrial.

Anyway, that's just my thoughts on the matter.

Well, until there is a proto-sludge subgenre we are going with sludge metal for their first 2 studio albums, and first 2 EPs.  Everything else will be tagged non-metal.  I've added them, waiting for Musicbrainz to import the albums so I can fix it all up nice.

As per site policy, an admin will close this thread.  If there is any more discussion pertaining to the placement of Swans albums,  a thread could be started in the Report Errors and Omissions section

Since the Swans have been added (thanks Colin), I'm locking the thread as per site policy.
