Karnivool are without a doubt a metal band.  I wish to add them here, but am stuck for what genre they would best belong to.  They definitely have prog metal elements, but I can sort of hear some alt metal in there.

Coincidently, wikipedia has both labels attached to the band:

Here's their myspace to judge yourselves:

Ive listened to their albums and I dont think they are proggy enough to be called progressive metal. Alternative would be a much better fit. Weve actually rejected them for progressive metal on PA. They were added to Heavy Prog instead if thats any help.

Heavy Prog these days includes lots of 'modern prog' bands like The Mars Volta - meaning they are heavy, but not necessarily in a metal sense. I know that quite well, since I was a member of the HP team for a long time, and have evaluated my fair share of stuff like that.

I do think they belong here, but not in progressive metal.

I just picked up their album Sound Awake today, and was wondering if either the prog or alt metal team has given these guys a thumbs up or thumbs down.

I'm sorry, I completely forgot to put them up to evaluation Embarrassed They're now listed in the Alt team thread, but we haven't been too fast in our actions lately...

Thumbs down for alt given as being a heavy rock band with very little metal elements, thread can be closed now.
