I like Hatchet although they hardly have an original sound.

True, but well worth the £3.15 I paid for this one.

The Astonishing (2CD)

1st listen.  At work so not an in depth listen.  I'm mostly liking what I am hearing.  The real test will be if and when I get the time to sit down with the booklet and read along to the lyrics while blasting from the family room stereo.

I gotta say, I was hoping that my second listen of The Astonishing would be a bit more enjoyable. A number of sections grabbed my attention during my first listen, and I thought the flow of the album would make a bit more sense if I heard it again. It doesn't - the album feels like a handful of great sections strung together by boring ballads. There are no great "songs" on the album IMO... just great sections. Maybe I need to give it more time (I wouldn't be surprised if this is the sort of thing that takes me years to appreciate), but sitting through all 2+ hours is brutal right now! Where are the heavy riffs, crazy technical sections, and well-developed compositions?

Now for something a bit more straightforward...

oh well, they're gone.

The T's review of the album on PA makes perfect sense, I agree to what he's saying there

^ I just went and read it, and I (unfortunately) agree with him too. Still hoping that it'll grow on me at some point, but I dunno... Unhappy

NP:

...and what is the deal with these established prog metal bands using shitty CG graphics? LOL

EDIT: To be clear, I like the cover for The Astonishing, but the visuals used in the Youtube trailer are truly awful. Dead

That's pretty much how I feel, although there are a couple songs I really enjoy. I love the songs "Three Days" and "A Moment of Betrayal", but most of everything else just feels uninspired imo. It's really a shame, as the album does have some great sections as you said.
If I say fuck two more times that's forty-six fucks in this fucked up rhyme
