listened to it twice now and it is growing on me each time i listen to it. still need to pick up a hard copy though. this is definitely a grower for sure where i fell in love with their last one condition human from the first listen. still a solid 3rd entry into their discography with Tod. they should have kicked jeff out years ago what do you think of this?

Revisiting this in preparation for their upcoming album, which I have a promo for. What the fuck, though? This is certainly much better than my 2.5 star rating from five years ago would indicate, so I don't know what the hell I was thinking back then.
Never mind, I forgot how bloody inconsistent it was. It's still moving up from 2.5 to 3 stars, though, so it is slightly better than I remembered.

It was just my first listen. I have mixed feelings on it as I prefer Geoff Tate as a vocalist. To me it was his voice that made them stand out as a band...without him they just kind of sound like every other prog metal band. I'll definitely be giving it more listens and maybe it will be a grower as you say.

Well, at least I know I'll like the vocals on this one, because they now have the Mystic Prophecy singer. I imagine longtime fans will be pissed, though, because that's 2/3 albums without their original singer, now.
Well, the vocals are at least consistent on this one and the songwriting doesn't reach the catastrophic lows of the previous album, but it also doesn't have as many highs. It gets the same rating on first listen. It also feels like 85% pure heavy metal to me, which is almost the opposite of the last one, though I'll keep the USPM tag for now, just so it's in line with their other releases.

| Sounds promising enough though I'll be honest, I sometimes can't tell the fucking difference between heavy metal and power metal and probably USPM too, for that matter! Artizan is a good example: they're labelled as 'heavy metal' here though if I had heard them w/o seeing that tag I would SWEAR they're a power metal band!

The differences can be subtle at times, yeah, but the main key is, power metal is faster. If an album has 60% or more slow to mid paced tracks, I have a really tough time considering it as power metal. There are other subtle differences, though, like certain guitar tones are more prominent in one genre than other, but the tempo is the biggest different. I haven't heard much Artizan before, but they do seem more heavy metal, from what the little I've heard.
