Alright, time for a poll that has been done a million times in a million different places, but it has never been done here.  Which Van Halen lead singer is your favorite from these three?

I have never heard Cherone, so I will have to choose between Sam and DaveWink. Though Hagar has undoubtedly the better voice, Roth was a charismatic showman, and as such essential for the group in its iconic line-up. However, I never cared for his voice, nor did I ever find him even remotely attractiveThumbs Down.

I'll admit to being a Van Hagar fan... 5150 is, by far, my favorite VH album, with heaps of nostalgia attached to it for me personally. So, i voted for Sammy.

I know that Cherone used to be a member of Extreme - a band I have never heard (they released their albums in a period when I did not keep up with the music world. However, I've heard very good things about their album Pornograffiti, and I'd definitely be interested in hearing it.

Van Halen 3 was terribly mistreated when it came out.  It was just as fashionable to bash it as it is to bash Phil Collins' led Genesis on a prog site.  But the reality is that it was actually a really good album.  If it had been released under another band name it might have been much better accepted.  On the other hand, it may have also faded into oblivion as another one album release by another short-lived supergroup.

Hmm, i remember when Extreme's pornograffiti came out... must've been '90 or so. I quite liked it at the time... basic Pop Metal but with some really good guitar playing (Van Halen-lite is what it really sounded like heh). But i remember thinking it was way better than other glam-metal type stuff of that era.

Honestly i don't think i've ever heard the Cherone-fronted VH before...

Back to Van Hagar... i wonder how many times i watched that  'Live Without A Net' vhs when i was 8?? Must've been over a hundred times... aye Van Hagar is deeply embedded in my music psyche. I wonder how many people here will admit to prefering Van Hagar? =P

OU812 was one of the very first CDs that I ever owned.  The day I bought my first CD player I also bought OU812 and Cinderella's Long Cold Winter.  OU812 got tons of plays from me.  I had 1984 on cassette tape, and that got worn out by so many plays.  I know a lot of people don't like the 80's synths on that one, but that is one of my all time favorite albums.  Jump; Panama; Hot For Teacher; Top Jimmy; 1984; etc... it was just an awesome album.  I kind of ignored 5150 when it came out.  I refused to make the switch to Sammy until I bought OU812 and loved it.  It really is hard to say which album I prefer.  They were my favorite band in my youth before Rush took that position.  I think that the songs are better during the Sammy era, but more fun during the David Lee Roth era, if that makes any sense.  But I'm still not sure who to vote for yet.

my first CD.. remember it well...  sparing you another Micky war story.. but it is a good one LOL

Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

wonder who many people had that one as their first CD 'upgrade' after all we had heard about the superior sound of the CD's LOL

you know... that makes perfect sense..  and probably spot on.  Since we are talking the singer.. the front man... you can see why so many consider Dave to THE singer for Van Halen...   I mean really..

if Sammy had been fronting Van Halen.. would Jeff Spicolli have hired Van Halen to play his birthday party..

I think not LOL

Dave has no voice... Haggar in the other hand is a wonderful singer and fit the spot with success.... A thousand times Haggar before Dave... love your avatar Micky, "those who are taken by the dark side..."

ahhh...  see... if Rush had replaced Geddy Lee with say... Greg Lake.. a far superior 'singer' and an equal talent on the bass... would Rush still be Rush. In the eyes of many.. no way in hell they would be.  That is the same for many VH fans.

sure Sammy was a better singer...  but for many.. including me...  you listened to Van Halen not for good songs.. like 'Right Now'?  Huh..Great song.. but not the Van Halen that people took to.. a kickass band with a bitchin guitarist and a larger than life front man who did as much as Eddie to make VH... well.. Van Halen.

I do respect Dave as a show man... he is unique... but you see... is about favorite Singer and that my friend is Sammy... yes... I would pick Right Now and Why Can't this be love before every other song from Dave era, except for... yeah... Eruption... WinkLOL

exactly...  Scott was dead on... Ice Cream Man was not...  a good song.. and Van Hagar was markedly better in making pop-rock.. pop metal if you want to call it that.  However if you want to talk favorite...  you can bury my ass 7' under that day I look to ability..  talent (which yes.. Sammy was a better singer) OVER pure enjoyment.. and Van Halen with Dave was pure guilty pleasure for many... it was simply fun to listen to..  fun to see in concert. A party. A blast to hear an over the top DLR.. and Eddie proving to the world HE was the guitarist of the ages... once he had..  musically... they went into cruise-control and churned out radio friendly music during Van Hagar.  Again.. not bad.. but not what many people fell in love with Van Halen for..

Can you imagine Hagar singing the acapella section in "I'm the One"?  LOL
That would have failure written all over it.
