Well, I see you already rated the new Gaerea...

The most recent Anaal Nathrakh, Endarkenment, is very good!

In the prog metal side, in my list I put Avandra, Grayceon, Dark Quarterer, Coexistence and Green Carnation. Damn, even Soilwork released a good prog metal EP!

^^ Bands that have released albums that I've bought this year that may not make my top 30 (still excellent albums) that might be more up your street Adam - Winterfylleth, Panzerfaust, Death Dealer, Countless Skies ( Excellent proggy melodeath that I've just discovered myself and may make my list yet).

Already on my list, well of course I rate them all but Armored Saint is a must, also Necrophobic and Vredehammer. Also White Stones  (Martin Mendez from Opeth) is worth a listen.

I'd forgotten Death Dealer had a new one, it would definitely be one to line up...except it's not on Spotify. Unhappy

Only thing on my list that you I could see you maybe liking is Outrage's new album. Really good melodic thrash with some grunge/stoner rock elements.

I'm going to throw this in here: https://eternalchampion.bandcamp.com/album/ravening-iron

This band is all the proof you need that USPM remains alive and well in the 2020s. Big smile

That looks like a cheap 1970s fantasy novel cover.LOL

I'm always suspicious of music which requires tits to promote it. Is it to distract from it not being very good? Unless it's pornogrind. Then you expect tits.Wink

It's USPM, it has a bit of a tradition of that.

70's influenced fantasy artwork, I mean. Though there are quite a few tits too.

The music speaks for itself. Eternal Champion have made two excellent modern USPM albums now.

I am currently working on my list which likely won't contain the full 30 as this year I have focused more on catching up with older releases I should have heard years ago.

Putting this together has highlighted issues with the way I am rating albums as some I want to place higher than others but conversely, I have rated them slightly lower. I can fully appreciate that opinions/ratings can change over time and that new releases can take some time to interpret and sink in but I think some refinement to my scoring system is definitely required.

I've started drafting mine. This is what I'm roughly working with, though I can't be certain yet I haven't left anything off. 4.5 and 5.0 albums could get changed around a lot yet, while 3.5's are outliers that may get in if there's room.

5.0

Hail Spirit Noir - Eden in Reverse
Mare Cognitum/Spectral Lore - Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine
Eternal Champion - Ravening Iron
Esoctrilihum - Eternity of Shaog

4.5

Ayreon - Transitus
Falconer - From a Dying Ember
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi
Lovebites - Electric Pentagram
Neal Morse - Sola Gratia
Uada - Djinn
Dark Forest - Oak, Ash & Thorn
Rage - Wings of Rage
Havukruunu - Uinuos syƶmein sota
Unleash the Archers - Abyss
Wake - Devouring Ruin
Paradise Lost - Obsidian
Sweven - The Eternal Resonance
Traveler - Termination Shock
Judicator - Let There Be Nothing
Enslaved - Utgard
Coexistence - Collateral Dimension
Gaerea - Limbo
Ensiferum - Thalassic
Iron Savior - Skycrest
Grave Digger - Fields of Blood

4.0

Carach Angren - Franckensteina Strataemontanus
Haken - Virus
Demons & Wizards - III
Sepultura - Quadra
Psychotic Waltz - The God-Shaped Void
Cryptic Shift -
Visitations From Enceladus
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Raven - Metal City
Mystras - Castles Conquered and Reclaimed
Manticora - To Live to Kill to Live
Testament - Titans of Creation
Glacier - The Passing of Time
Temple of Void - The World That Was

3.5

Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant
Pyramaze - Epitaph
Wytch Hazel - III: Pentecost
Oceans of Slumber - Oceans of Slumber
Elder - Omens

I can't get my head around this yet. Looks like Nicole and I have a few of the same favourites though. I adored Hail Spirit Noir's new one. I was as surprised as any that they dropped black metal, but they sure didn't disappoint all the same.

It's certainly my top album and has been since it's release.

The album I expected to dethrone it didn't even get close. Although I do like it more than many seem to. Guess no one here needs to be told which that one is.

^ That new Ayreon album just hasn't clicked with me. I'm a fan of much of his earlier stuff but this one comes across as a bit bland to my ears.

I like it but it is undoubtedly also one of the weakest things he's done in terms of the composition itself. I think he leant too much into the story aspect.

This is a band that's not on my radar. Should probably check it out the way everyone else is talking about it.
