First analysis of BAN's The Desanctification: notably weaker than Sect(s) and maybe even older albums like MoRT.  Kinda disappointing, still looking forward to the final album of the 777 trilogy.

Still have yet to listen to Esoteric's new album.

I wanna mention the latest offerings from Dream Theater and Opeth, both of which are very different but nevertheless masterfully executed music!

a thumbs down to Morbid Angels latest, though it did make me laugh...

Well, having listened to a few more albums from recommendations made on this site, I've added a few more potential top ten albums to the list....and dropped a few off. Again, In no particular order:

1. Anubis Gate - Anubis Gate
2. Evergrey - Glorious Collision
3. Myrath - Tales of the Sands
4. Leprous - Bilateral
5. Symphony X - Iconoclast
6. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
7. Arch/Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance
8. Opeth - Heritage
9. Fen - Epoch
10. Alcest - Ecailles De Lune
11.SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty One

Quite the proggy list, but the last three have been revelations for me just in the past week and I'm actively looking for more outside my comfort zone to consider. I wish I could rate Megadeths' and Anthraxs' new releases for top ten consideration, but I think they are, at best, 3 and a half to 4 star efforts. Still, keeping an open mind and ear towards releases I haven't  caught up to from earlier in the year and those that have yet to hit.

I've heard a lot of bands this year but not always with enough time to really explore them.
Number 1 is pretty certain.

Leprous - Bilateral
Thence - These stones cry from the earth
Subrosa - No Help For The Mighty Ones
Opeth - Heritage
Garden Wall - Assurdo
Obscura - Omnivium

And 2 great EPs
Enslaved - The Sleeping Gods
Between the Buried and Me - The Parallax

Cloudkicker's Let Yourself Be Huge is beautiful, but not metal by any stretch of the imagination

Can't say I can compile a list just yet, but I have an idea of what albums will be appearing.

I have no favorite album this year, because the Cheeky Girls haven't released an album this year.

I listened to Surtur Rising quite a bit, but I have been pretty much addicted to two albums:

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Demisery - Hive of Mutation

Gggaaahhhhhhhhyyyyaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhh!!!!!

Been listening to Vektor's new release, Outer Isolation, non-stop since I got it today!

Is there a better album released in 2011? I submit that there is NOT!

This has just rocketed to the top of my best of list.

Doom on your eternal souls if you don't give this album a spin or twelve.....

I think there is a very real possibility that the new Kayo Dot album (due mid-December) ends up tagged avant-metal... I hope so, anyway.  A guy who was at the concert where they recorded it say:

"It is indeed a very intense listen.  Excellent stuff, on par with anything they've done in the past, and HEAVY.  Yes, you read correctly.  There's screaming vocals, distorted guitars, and all the fantastic Kayo Dot progressive/experimental attributes we've come to know and love. "

The artwork reminds me of the early Voivod covers.

^ I was thinking the same! Especially the logo, very Voivod-esque.

Good thing this is an "all album" list because lots of non metal releases I really liked this year!
No order, at least yet:

Iconoclast - Symphony X
The Hunter - Mastodon
War of the Roses - Ulver
Heritage - Opeth (non metal IMO)
Carbon-Based Anatomy - Cynic
Empros - Russian Circles
Ghost - Devin Townsend
Deconstruction - Devin Townsend
Let Yourself Be Huge - Cloudkicker

Listening right now: Weightless by AAL and it's sounding pretty great!
To be listened: Celestial Lineage by WITTR and some of these albums Blut Aus Nord.
Also, The Inside Room by 40 Watt Sun is sounding cool. Funeral doom metal with clean vox!

Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Testament. The real Big Four of thrash metal!

The new Antediluvian has dropped.
