I'm finally hearing a few releases I'm anticipating, but still nothing that strikes me as a 5 star album (yet).  I'm better prepared for my list this year since I'm starting it earlier.  Every album I listen to in it's entirety goes on a list, and I'll shift the rankings as new ones impress me or old ones grow or fade on me.  Last year I wasn't too concerned with it until October/November.

Time for an update. I included everything from 2011 I've reviewed this time.

5/5

Within Temptation - The Unforgiving
Wolfchant - Call of the Black Winds
Obscura - Omnivium
Saille - Irreversible Decay

4.5/5

Argus - Boldly Stride the Doomed
Turisas - Stand Up and Fight
Fen - Epoch
Abysmal Dawn - Leveling the Plane of Existence

4/5

Falkenbach - Tiurida
Evergrey - Glorious Collision
Syn Ze Şase Tri - ntre Două Lumi
Aurora Borealis - TimeLine: The Beginning and End of Everything
Battlelore - Doombound
Elmi - The Psychotropic Witch

3.5/5

Raven Woods - Enfeebling The Throne
Theatres des Vampires - Moonlight Waltz

3/5

Folkodia - Forgotten Lore
Folge Dem Wind - Inhale The Sacred Poison

2.5/5

nothing yet...

2/5

Sirenia - The Enigma Of Life

Heard but not yet reviewed/rated

Unless any of these lose their appeal pretty quick they're all looking at at least 4*

Crimfall - The Writ Of Sword
Dolmen - Anhelos Ancestrales
Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

This one really not sure about...

Vamillia - Rule the World/Deathtiny Land

Been a good year so far. Last year I only found two albums I rated as 5*, this year 3 albums already.

A bit too early for me yet, but I have an idea that Obscura's new album and Artillery's coming album will both figure on that list.

My number one album of 2011 by default (it's the only one I have) is Crucified Mortal's self-titled album. Pretty old school thrashy type stuff. Cool beans.
Lost respect for these archives when I saw Creed added, among other bands. Not going to be foruming here anymore. You can keep my reviews if you want.

3. Agoraphobic Nosebleed/ Despise You - And On and On...
4. Virus - The Agent That Shapes the Desert

Ive updated my list to include the latest Void album released in January. A great return.

haven't listened much to 2011, but so far it does seem like a great year! Magic Pie and Fen seem to be at the top of the list, but I'm not sure about the Fen's rating I should give yet, give me a few listens.

^ I'm still trying to make up my mind about it. At some points it's better than Carving Desert Canyons, then at points it's worse, then at points it's around the same... it's a very different sound then CDC, for sure.

Listened to that the other day, it is very good. Also the new Obscura album is pretty good, too.

Well here's what I got so far. Heard 12 2011 albums so far, but I'll cut out the entries that I got as promos but didn't appeal to me personally, and anything lowers than 3*

Wolfchant - Call of the Black Winds
Saille - Irreversible Decay
Fen - Epoch
Abysmal Dawn - Leveling The Plane Of Existence
Falkenbach - Tiurida
Evergrey - Glorious Collision
Aurora Borealis - TimeLine: The Beginning and End of Everything
Battlelore - Doombound
Folkodia - Forgotten Lore

Besides Fen, I've only heard one 2011 album: Grails "Deep Politics"
It's fantastic, not metal, but very dark psych/post-rock that might appeal to dark ambient metal fans (such as Fen Smile)

The band was discovered by Michael Gira (Swans) by the way!

Absolute masterpiece IMO! The only way that album won't make my list is if five more 5-star albums roll around before year's end... which would be awesome as well. Cool

Didn't it take more time to write that edit than to just fix the mistake? LOL

not on 3 hours of sleep the previous night, it didn't
