A police stand-off took place around a block away from my house yesterday: http://news.ca.msn.com/ontario/oshawa/suspect-surrenders-in-bizarre-day-long-police-standoff-in-whitby

It involved a few city workers, with a former city councilman being the one who took the hostage.  If that doesn't seem too bizzare, here's some of the man's ideas and actions while in office: http://news.ca.msn.com/ontario/oshawa/lutczyks-tenure-with-city-tumultuous-litigious

There was a police stand-off a block from my house a few years ago.  It was late at night and I was out with my family when it started, so they wouldn't let us back home until it was over.  Apparently some guy with severe depression took one of his own family members hostage and it went for like 6 or 7 hours.  It started off really exciting because they set up the mobile command center in front of the house and had at least 8 cop cars there, but it got boring pretty fast until the dude shot himself.  Very sad.

Like you said, there's not a lot of crime around here apart from crap like loitering, marijuana, underage drinking, more loitering, thrift store shoplifting, etc.  So when something serious happens it's all anyone talks about for the next month or so.  Of course I would much rather have it that way than live in a place where gunshots are ringing out as often as the birds are singing.

I saw the headline "Italian scientist guilty of  2009 manslaughter" while at work.  If it mentioned "for earthquake forecast" I would have read this sooner. Shocked
