This has potential to be easily my favorite thing Portnoy has done since leaving DT, so hopefully the whole album delivers.

Unfortunately, this seems to fall into the same traps as many modern prog albums I've struggled with: The songwriting is just too samey and all the songs are at basically the same pace. A lack of variety and creativity is really starting to kill the genre for me, at this point. It's still a solid album, but nowhere near as good as I was hoping for, though it could just be me finally getting worn out on prog.

I figure it's been long enough since my last black metal experiment, so let's see how this goes. Two tracks in, and it's pretty interesting, if a bit raw for my tastes.

Just started this one, and man is the singer ever desperately in need of an energy drink or something, lol! He sounds like he's falling asleep. Musically it seems good, but these vocals just plain suck.

How is it? The title track is a beast, and I think the best song they've ever done.

It seems like a mixed bag on first listen. It's weird, because I remember Shogun being my favorite by them despite being largely a metalcore album, and yet on this album the metalcore vocals are really bothering me. Then again, the clean vocals aren't doing much for me, either, so maybe I just don't like their vocalist in general. Musically it's really good, feeling like a mix between the metalcore of their earlier releases and the Avenged Sevenfold brand of heavy metal they had on their last album.

In Flames + Amaranthe = Pretty damn mediocre so far.

Giving this another go, since it and the new Trivium were probably the two albums I liked the most of everything I tried earlier today, though nothing really blew me away. Hopefully this is a grower.
