Pickman's Muse (2010 - US): One of the best Lovecraft adaptations I've ever seen. Thrilled to discover this overlooked precious gem of a movie!!! The amalgamation of the psychotic and the occult was spectacular. Easily 9/10

On a side note, I don't seek faithfulness in adaptations. So, some others can see this as a frustrating failure too. Haunter of the Dark is one of HPL's best stories IMO, and methinks this is a deserving adaptation.

Pretty good, a bit experimental too.

This one was really good, with the final act being especially insane. I had begun to suspect whodunit before the reveal, but it didn't lessen the film for me.

Certainly a bit different. I feel like there were some ideas that could and should have been taken further. But overall a solid film.

Columbia Noir Boxsets #1

Disc 5: The Garment Jungle. Who would have thought the clothing industry could be so cutthroat? the best film in the first boxset so far, with one title to go.

Three Stooges short:

Well paired with the feature film. Lots of their slapstick hijinks and a lot of good fun.

Caught this on TV some years ago. Don't recall the specific details about the film after all this time, but I remember enjoying it. Very like 'Allo 'Allo.

Read this book when I was at high school. This crappy TV movie fucked it up. There's Shatner with a mo and glasses, and Andy Griffiths is also in it, but for a movie about sex and drugs, there's not actually much in the way of drugs, and no sex or profanity whatsoever.

didn't like that one either, too slow and boring and I don't generally care about aliens

I think Daniel Craig is my favourite Bond. The 1967 abomination starring David Niven doesn't deserve to share this name. Lots of big noisy fun. I particularly liked the sequence with the sinking building.

Columbia Noir Boxsets #1

Disc 4: 5 Against the House. Not as good as the last two movies, but with it's moments. The ending is a bit flat. Notably the film was an influence on Martin Scorsese for Casino and it's also an early pre-Vertigo role for Kim Novak. Another interesting factoid is that the university campus the characters go to didn't exist in real life until 1995, forty years on from the film's release.

Three Stooges short:

Surprisingly meh.

In between watching my latest additions to the collection, I've pulled a load of movies off my shelf that I've had the longest but never watched again/for a long time. This was first up. I remember enjoying it a few years ago, but today I just found it all tedious and I lost interest quickly. Didn't hold up at all. Colin may be interested if still looking for documentary style stuff. More sci-fi I guess but I think it may apply. Personally though I'm putting on the get rid pile. I don't need to see this a third time.

Tackling a similar theme to the feature, this is another fun short bit of slapstick featuring a slightly different incarnation of the Three Stooges than on the You Nazty Spy! short.

I reckon Shemp always gets a raw deal in the Stooges, same as Zeppo Marx in the Marx Bothers.

Disc 3: Drive a Crooked Road. Another solid film. Starts off playing out like a romance, but turning into a heist film. Betrayals abound like they're going out of style.

Three Stooges short:

Only thematically linked to the feature by the garage setting. Mostly this is another pisstake at the Germans in WWII. Personally like preferred this one to You Nazty Spy!

Disc 2: The Undercover Man. A much stronger film than Escape in the Fog, not least because it doesn't rely on the far fetched but also because it has the excellent Glenn Ford in the lead role. While Ford has better known movies (and rightly so), this one's a solid lesser gem.

Three Stooges short:

I forgot to post this one:

Probably because it wasn't very good. Right from the start I just couldn't give a shit about these characters.

Some interesting aspects, some good actors among the cast and overall watchable enough, but also at the end of the day a bit meh. Released in 2000, the plot hinges heavily on the so called 'Face on Mars' photographed in real life in 1976. In 2001, better pictures of the area confirmed what was obvious to anyone with half a brain cell: that it was pareidolia all along.

It's also not the sort of movie I expect from Brian de Palma, who was the main reason I watched it. I guess this movie is the point he's truly entered his directing decline.

The ending's a right downer, but the rest of it's a pretty fun movie. Not a full on comedy as expected, but fun.

Columbia Noir Boxsets #1

Disc 1: Escape in the Fog. Wartime spy noir. Quite short, clocking in barely past the hour. It loses something by hinging a major plot point on the 100% correct clairvoyant dream of its female lead, which detracts from the realism of the setting. Not a best start to this boxset but overall very watchable.

Columbia Noir boxsets also each include a Three Stooges short. First up:

Quite fun slapstick taking the piss of Hitler and the Third Reich. You know, as you do.
