Among Ghibl's more innocent movies, although there's still some eyebrow raising moments for us western audiences, notably the bath scene (bear in mind our censors rated this a U in the UK). Overall a truly charming movie that did the trick to reset the mood after Grave of the Fireflies. Kinda feels like Ghibli knew what they were doing releasing these the same day. Some will claim this as Ghibli's best, but it's not among my absolute favourites. Next we'll be moving onto the Ghibli movie I've already watched the most times: Kiki's Delivery Service.

I so wanted to see this movie when I was 11. It had motorbikes with machine guns and missiles in it! I was sorely disappointed when my parents didn't take me. Perhaps they knew something that I didn't? That it would be shit... I watched the RiffTrax version, which made it a bit more bearable, but they are fucking annoying too. And this was so dreadful it was in IMDB's original 100 Worst Movies Ever.

It took some doing, but I was determined to watch this fucking thing. What a turd of a movie! There were a couple of genuine laugh out loud moments, but there was so much total fucking drivel in between that I couldn't tell you what those moments were. This movie is also racist as fuck with the way it portrays different people too. The only (unintentional) positive from the whole thing was that it shows older women are still sexual beings, and can enjoy a bit of casual sex as much as anyone. One of the best books I ever read at school (along with The Grapes of Wrath and To Kill a Mockingbird). I thought this movie did a fairly reasonable job with a challenging book. There are a few deviations from the source material, but a movie will always be different from a book. Simon's inner dialogue is missing, and he isn't nearly as central a character as in the book. My better half had never read the book or seen the film before and thought it was pretty brutal, but really enjoyed it. Silly but fun rom-com with a twist. With a cast featuring the likes of Thandie Newton, Simon Pegg and Hank Azaria, the real scene stealers here are the two supporting characters played by Dylan Moran and Harish Patel. "Did you have a good marriage, Mr Ghoshdashtidar?" "Ah. I remember the feeling of being complete... of spending every day with my best friend... but most of all... I remember all the fucking." |

I actually feel more affected by this one the second time around and I think the pandemic may have something to do with it. Different context I know, but I draw a lot of parallels in the depiction of long term suffering under adverse conditions, and especially when the little girl gets sick and dies it just really hits home. When I first watched this, we were much earlier in the pandemic and everyone was still going around saying that it would all be behind us before the year was out, and it made me wonder if in the early years of WW2 whether people thought the same, but it just went on and on.
Anyway, maybe the much more light hearted My Neighbour Totoro will cheer me up after that emotional gut punch.

I love this movie, but it is just so sad. I agree as well that it should probably have a 15 certificate. I think I was about 13 or 14 when I first saw this and even then my Mum was concerned over it. And I was definitely not allowed to watch this with my little brother around.

I actually feel a bit emotionally wreaked after re-watching this one. How in the holy fuck is this only rated a 12 restriction in the UK (which is a pretty meaningless certificate here ever since the concept of 12A was also introduced)? Only got less than 20 minutes in and had already concluded that there's no way in fuck my parents would have allowed me to watch this at only 12! It's a masterpiece of a movie, but easy viewing it is not.

The first true Ghibli movie. Also the first I saw. I don't love it quite as much as NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind or others from Miyazaki, but it's altogether excellent even after the third watch.

And so the Studio Ghibli marathon begins!
This is the third time I've watched this one now, and I've concluded it's infinitely re-watchable.

My last few:
Intriguing, but the 'place you just can't escape from' thing has been done before and better. This dressed it up as satire, but ultimately the whole thing feels like a waste of time. Finally saw this having watched the first one back in June 2019! It didn't disappoint, but I get the feeling it's pretty safe to jump off this franchise from this point. Nothing like as expected, barely even a horror movie. Still a better film than the Conjuringverse's La Llorona film though, which I can't even remember a single thing about already.

Stupid but fun. Sean Penn's Spicoli is a brilliant stoner character. And Judge Reinhold gets caught doing what many a teenage boy did in the 80s after seeing Phoebe Cates in (and out) of a bikini. Also has a rocking soundtrack.
