This might not be a popular opinion around here, but for the most part, I don't really get into live metal albums (there are some exceptions). I prefer having the full visual and audio experience, as I feel something is lost with just the audio. More often than not, I prefer listening to live albums from prog rock or jazz artisits due to their more willingness to "shake things up" in their playing (once again, there are exceptions).
That being said, I think a live metal album usually would make for a great substitute over a best of/compilation. For example, I'd get more enjoyment out of hearing Iron Maiden's "Rock In Rio" over one of their numerous best-of albums. Edited by Stooge - 17 Jan 2011 at 4:44pm |

^ I agree. I just don't find that much more enjoyment in listening to live albums than studio version ones. If I had a choice to buy a life or studio I'd probably go wit the studio.

I generally do not do live albums. Live DVD's are another matter entirely.
The one live album that I really like is Epic'a The Classical Conspiracy, mainly because much of it is covers of classical music mixed with metal, and they don't have this material on any studio release. I have a few others in my collection, but they don't get played as much as that one, not even Live After Death. So I can only do a list of 2 really. 1. Epica - The Classical Conspiracy 2. Iron Maiden - Live After Death

I'm probably veering a bit too strongly into "hard rock" territory here, but off the top of my head, I'd have to say...
1. Strangers in the Night - UFO 2. Made in Japan - Deep Purple 3. Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy 4. Unleashed in the East - Judas Priest 5. Live at the BBC - Diamond Head (The first show is excellent, the second...not so much) 6. Maiden Japan - Iron Maiden 7. Live! Go for What You Know - Pat Travers 8. Live in Munich 1977 - Rainbow 9. The Eagle Has Landed - Saxon 10. One Night at Budokan - The Michael Schenker Group |

^ Seconded! Amazing show!
Did you see them in the venue where Steve Hackett came to play Hogweed? I believe that was in the UK. |
