On my second listen, and not really feeling it. Their last album was perhaps tougher to listen to just because of all the damn awful narration, but this has to be my least favorite batch of songs I've heard from them. It just feels like they're trying so hard to be dark and heavy, the actual soul just isn't there, anymore, at least imo. Hopefully it grows on me, but if anything it seems to be getting worse.

^Yep, I even went back to listen to select songs from their previous albums, and the highlights from those were far better than even the best tracks here, and the worst tracks here (Shoa, Gods of War, All in Ruins) are the absolute worst I've ever heard from Rebellion, by a long shot.

I've only given that a first listen so far and my early impressions are that it's a return to form, but not close to their best work.

The lack of narration is a definite plus. I think for me the faster songs are still good, but just seem to be missing something compared to usual, while the slower songs range from mediocre (Sweet Dreams and Waterland) to literally unbearable to sit through (Shoa and All in Ruins especially, I had to skip on my third listen because I was just completely sick of them.) It's not like I don't usually like their slower songs, either, considering Rest in Peace is probably my favorite by them, and that one is quite slow.

I always dug Bal-Sagoth's album covers, this one and The Atlantis Ascendant in particular.
