Well behind again.
Decent western with Lee Marvin. Naff title, decent old school western. Great black & white war film. It was okay. Crap. Not the most exciting western I've seen. Expected better. Good thriller. Underwhelmed by it now I've finally seen this highly rated zapata western. A gem. Never seen Nicole Kidman in a role like this before. A really gritty movie. It might be a halfway decent film noir but Amazon should be ashamed of the film quality of this and most of the other old movies they have on Prime. The picture was so bad it was like watching YouTube on dial up internet back in the mid 2000s. Less than standard definition. 1940s western gem. Quite gritty for its time. Another gem. Looked really great and stylish on blu-ray as well. Horror western. Promising early on but quickly falls apart as soon as the horror elements start. Though I maintain that the western setting is an untapped hotbed of potential for horror movies. Slow burning, weird and a lot left open to interpretation, yet actively engaging. I even watched the near three hour Director's Cut and didn't find the running time to drag, though I'm sceptical if it will hold up to a repeat viewing.

Recent highlights:
Slow paced survival movie, but I'm a sucker for anything set in snowy climates. Very good later day John Wayne western. Surprised by how entertaining this was. Basically a slasher version of Groundhog Day. Some plot holes though, unfortunately. Would serve perfectly as a companion piece to Deliverance.

As usual, just the highlights since my last post. Actually been a load of crap not worth mentioning lately.

I loved this one. Fans of the more humouristic superhero movies like Deadpool and Hellboy should love this one too: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1250777/ |

Spanish language gem. Initially presents itself like it might be a horror movie, but it's actually a very twisty crime mystery-thriller. I'm really not sure why this is so low rated on IMDb. Absolute top rank 2019 western: gritty, violent and gory, with one scene being particularly harrowing, it has realism oozing out of it in droves. John Wayne will be turning in his grave.

Disturbing and gory Korean crime thriller. This isn't really a 'highlight' like I've been restricting the movies I post to recently, but it is worth commenting on. As it is it's an okay movie, but also the biggest disappointment I've seen for a long time. With the unusual quirky title you'd think it would be a black comedy or at least a comedy of some description. It isn't. Instead they play it out as a drama which doesn't work on so many levels but with so many scenes it's so easy to imagine how it could have been a gem as a black comedy. So much wasted potential here. Solid Liam Neeson thriller. I don't usually post the poster for re-watches, but I actually liked this one even more the second time around and it's the kind of film where I feel like I may like it even more when I eventually watch it again (because I certainly will watch this one again). It's a shame that this is so underappreciated. It's a real gem. Which leads me onto: I hadn't seen the sequel before. I found it just as good as the first one. I can't actually remember the last comedy movie I saw for the first time that had me laughing out loud as much as this one. This was one of only three times that Eastwood reprised a role (the others being his Man with No Name and Dirty Harry performances) and again it's a real shame these are so overlooked in his acting filmography. Bloody brilliant.

I'm well behind here again. But here's my highlights since my last post:
Good Japanese sci-fi. Quite the crime gem. The premise seems really dumb, but it's a very fun movie though very much a product of it's time. Good period drama. Not the best recent war film I've seen, I think that still has to be Hacksaw Ridge, but it came close. Underrated movie IMO. One of the best recent westerns this side of The Hateful Eight, and also one of the most unique I've ever seen. Solid western. A great is rather embellished true story. This one may even go up in my estimations after a re-watch, but it's far too weird to say I completely got it after one viewing.

Last four movies watched. All solid but no standouts I feel the need to fetch a poster for:
The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1974) The Hills Have Eyes (1977) Horror Express (1972) Blood Rage (1987) It's been a very 70's dominate month so far.
